Not sure of the score, but I see an SMU win and one more stake in the heart of Peruna's law.

When has twitter been right about anything? It's guys guessing talking to guys who work at a university who are guessing.

Here's a guess. Nothing happens this week. But there's a meeting today! There's a meeting tomorrow! Games start this week! None of that matters.

Anyone reputable? Who cares about chatter from Big 12 trolls desperate to keep the ACC out of Texas.

SMU is proposing to take no distribution for as many as seven years, something Yahoo Sports reported more than a week ago. Options range from adding all three, adding only Stanford and Cal, adding only SMU or adding none of them."

This caught my attention. Options 2 and 4 would fall under Peruna's Law. So 50/50.

Re: ACC considering SMU

While the PAC would have been more fun for vacation travel destinations (Love to vacay out just ignore policies), the ACC is a way better fit for SMU. Duke,UVA,UNC etc seem to be a better pairing compared to Oregon, Washington, etc when looking at the profiles of the institutions.

Had the PAC stayed intact and this was on the table, I would definitely have pivoted to the ACC. The exposure with the early kick offs, along with the basketball component, a TV deal with a long runway puts the ACC opportunity a few notches above the PAC. We have all seen what type of basketball program we can have when things go right, have to think we would be able to recruit some pretty strong basketball players being in the ACC situated in Dallas.

As always, we are being looked at out of necessity, not desire. After the ACC witnessed what happened last Friday coupled with discontent within the conference has caused them to get proactive extremely quickly (the anti George Klaivkoff). He does not want to see this happen to the ACC, so bringing in schools that you might ordinarily not have is going be likely instead of a pipe dream.

The only way the ACC Blue Bloods are going to remain content is to pump up those dollars they are receiving. Reading the reports, the ESPN TV deal requires a pro rata share no matter who the teams are. There aren’t many schools(maybe even just us) that are willing to forgo distributions for an extended period of time to move up. The other two schools will be left for dead and in a much worse position than us, so you have to think that they would forgo the maximum amount they could that would still allow them to operate their athletic department. So if you total up the cash from those three schools and distribute it to the rest of them, their payouts going to look pretty nice on paper. These variables are extremely favorable for us in the climate we are in.

I myself have been extremely critical of our own administration since the first day I set foot on campus. I never understood why we didn’t make strong attempts to elevate our athletic program. Not only did we not try, we went out of our away not to. I want to tip my cap to the administration this go around. Clearly, they are doing everything within their power to get us into a major conference. They tried with the PAC, as soon as that imploded, they were already working the lines with the ACC. The fact that we have come out of the gate offering to forgo the distributions to make this happen and the urgency they are displaying makes me extremely happy. I get that we are a couple hundred million dollars invested (pot committed at this point with athletic faculty/stadium upgrades) but they are doing everything within their power to try and make this happen. If it doesn’t work out, it’s just Peruna’s law taking over, not lack of effort like it has been the last four decades.

Re: Realignment Update

So I think at this point a MWC/AAC + Pac rejects merger to create one “best of the rest” conference and have it have a similar amount of teams as the big boys.

Winner of that conference gets into the playoff and keeps things much simpler.

We can’t be surprised, it’s Peruna’s Law at work like always.

SMU’s inaction during the 90’s/early 2000’s put us here. We tried this time, I don’t blame the University… This time at least.

Re: God No! Peruna Law Go Away!

The Big 12 schools are obsessed about it because they all applied for the PAC when UT and OU announced they were leaving, and they were all rejected. They can't believe that SMU might get in.

ASU is not going to abandon 80% of their donor revenue (California) to join the Big 12. University of Colorado leadership doesn't look back on being a member of the Big 12 with dreamy eyes and wish that they weren't affiliated with the UC system or Stanford. Utah is the most prominent they have ever been from a national recognition standpoint, and they aren't going to give it up to be part of a low academic conference.

And anyone who thinks that Cal and Stanford will be associated with Boise State, UNLV, or Fresno State doesn't know what they are talking about. It is like the academic bigwigs in the Big 10 adding a MAC school. It isn't going to ever happen.

Re: God No! Peruna Law Go Away!

There are forces trying their best to make the Big 12 appear stronger as a conference than the PAC12. But consider what they have lost over time - Colorado, Nebraska, Missouri, A&M, and now UT and OU. They were replaced by TCU - which appears to be a good addition, and now 4 G5 schools - arguably the best at this moment in that category. Are they really the stronger of the two?

Pac lost USC and UCLA - huge loss. But there are still 10 solid schools remaining with 70 years together. They need some "fresh meat" and exposure in new markets and time zones. Otherwise they will become an afterthought of college football, playing too late for anyone in America to care.

Sure there are some fans that might be pissy, and argue for a Fresno, Boise, or even UNLV addition, but that doesn't really help their NATIONAL perception. Playing Boise helps Boise far more than it will ever help the remaining PAC schools. And it doesn't get them into the CT or Texas. Don't underestimate the value of exposure in Texas - its why they flirted with adding Texas schools before. There are recruits by the hundreds, major media markets, and many Fortune 500 companies based here. And academically, which is a priority for the Presidents, SMU is a good addition, just need more research $$$.

Playing in the PAC is not ideal for SMU, but that P5 status is worth it. Consider how TCU was able to dominate the MWC before their Big 12 invite. Could SMU be a winner in the new PAC? With the added value of the P5 status and finally some conference and coaching stability, I think we can. NIL and transfer portal makes the scenario more likely.

This last week has been fun on social media, as the idiots have come out of the woodwork in vain attempts to undermine SMUs move. It does seem that the newbies have the most to say - especially BYU fans. But the one that fascinates me is Tech fans. They are apoplectic over this. In 26 years, Tech has NEVER won the Big 12, and averages less than 4 conference wins a year - what is their beef with SMU? I truly think its jealousy, now that they have been abandoned by most everyone, and are not invited to be with the cool kids. And even worse, they know that SMU, in the era of NIL, and with P5 status, will be a formidable recruiting opponent in DFW. Tech will face increased competition in both DFW and Houston. Can they win and be relevant recruiting Lubbock and Midland? I don't think so.

If this happens and we get the PAC 12 invite there will be a lot of butt hurt people in Texas. You can feel the anxiety and angst at having us compete on equal footing.

Re: God No! Peruna Law Go Away!

Who knows what's going to happen!

"PAC-2 potentially losing Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, Utah, Oregon and Washington and then adding SMU and some Mountain West programs, like San Diego State"

"Pac-12/Mountain West merger."

CBS Sports' Dennis Dodd, "Out of that upheaval emerges a conference of leftovers"
Dodd's prediction for the Pac-12 would have Cal, Stanford, Washington State and Oregon State with Boise State, Fresno State, SMU and San Diego State. "That lineup would reduce the Power Five to the Power Four, creating implications beyond the Pac-12 itself." he wrote.

As for Stanford, Ducks Wire predicted that it could go independent and not be a part of a conference.

Re: PAC12 Scenario = Expansion

Can you please post the article as my computer says that is a malicious site?

Pac-12 University Presidents Approve Next Steps In SDSU and SMU Expansion Process

The Aztecs and Mustangs edge closer to Power 5 integration.

Fun fact: SMU’s mustang, Peruna, is the only mascot to have killed another mascot, after kicking Fordham’s ram in 1934.

San Francisco, CA- The college sports world has watched closely as Pac-12 Commissioner George Kliavkoff bobbles a new conference network agreement. He has been in hot pursuit of a deal since last July, and it is not yet final. His attention has been drawn in several directions as the gravity of UCLA and USC chasing dollars to the Big Ten has set in. Meanwhile, the BIG 12 continuously threatens to pillage his prestigious conference.

San Jose Mercury News sportswriter Jon Wilner, known as the apex Pac-12 conference insider, recently reported in his Mercury News article the latest status of conference expansion for key entrants San Diego State and Southern Methodist University.

In his article, Wilner reported the following update:

“University presidents discussed SMU and San Diego State as expansion candidates during a meeting last week and approved commissioner George Kliavkoff taking the next step in the complicated process of adding membership, according to sources with knowledge of the meeting.

Sources emphasized that the approval was informal in nature — the presidents did not vote to add specific schools — but expansion is viewed as highly likely.”

Kliavkoff was spotted recently at a SMU basketball game hospitality suite, and was not apparently concerned with the optics. It’s well documented that Kliavkoff met with SDSU Athletic Director J.D. Wicker and President Adela De La Torre.

The three-phases for expansion involve:
* New media rights contract with network/streaming partners,
* Schools must agree to sign rights to the conference, and
* Formal invitations must be extended to expansion candidates.

Under Pac-12 bylaws, conference expansion requires a three-fourths vote of the presidents, meaning eight of the 10 schools would have to approve any new members. Naturally, USC and UCLA will not participate in expansion proceedings during their remaining 18 months in the conference.
SMU and San Diego State are the clear candidates having moved far beyond the initial group of universities under consideration, and at least San Diego State stands out as the most strategically advantageous candidate. It’s highly probable that neither entrant would receive full revenue shares, at least initially, according to sources, and in accordance with tradition. It is undisputed that each candidate has a lot to offer in its own right.

It’s important to note that in a 10-team conference versus a 12-team league, the Pac-12 would have approximately 65 games instead of 78 available, and this would equate to a less desirable package, so expansion concurrently with (not after) a media rights deal is looking more and more strategically vital.

Wilner’s Mercury News article also featured the following description of primary expansion candidates:

SAN DIEGO STATE
Location: San Diego
Type: Public
Undergraduate enrollment: 36,000 (approx.)
Endowment: $350 million (approx.)
Research level: R2 (second-highest designation)
U.S. News ranking: 151st in national universities
Media market: 1.13 million homes (per Nielsen/2021 DMA)
Conference: Mountain West
Presidential fact: SDSU president Adela de la Torre grew up in the Bay Area and owns three degrees from Cal.
School fact: Last year, California passed a law allowing California State Universities to offer independent doctorates in Public Health, an important step for CSU campuses to bolster their academic bona fides. (Previously, CSUs were allowed to confer doctorates only in partnership with private colleges or University of California schools.) The change is viewed as an important step for SDSU in becoming an R1 research school.
Football facts: SDSU is a founding member of the Mountain West in 1998. The Aztecs have won at least 10 games in five of the past six seasons (excluding 2020) and have regularly beaten Pac-12 opponents under coaches Rocky Long and Brady Hoke. SDSU football alumni include Marshall Faulk and Joe Gibbs. In 2022, the Aztecs opened Snapdragon Stadium, which has a capacity of 35,000 but can expand to hold 55,000.
(Endowment source: National Association of College and University Business Officers)

SMU
Location: Dallas
Type: Private
Undergraduate enrollment: 6,800 (approx.)
Endowment: $2.0 billion (approx.)
Research level: R2 (second-highest designation)
U.S. News ranking: 72nd in national universities
Media market: 2.96 million homes (per Nielsen/2021 DMA)
Conference: American Athletic
Presidential fact: SMU president Gerald Turner is a former chair of the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.
School fact: SMU is affiliated with the United Methodist Church (UMC) but, in 2019, moved to “update its governance documents to make it clear that SMU is solely maintained and controlled by its Board as the ultimate authority for the University,” according to a statement from Turner. The UMC fought the move, but a Dallas judge ruled in favor of SMU two years later.
Football facts: SMU has a strong football history but is the only school to receive the death penalty from the NCAA (in the late 1980s). The list of famous football alumni includes Doak Walker, Don Meredith and Eric Dickerson. Since the collapse of the Southwest Conference, the Mustangs have been members of the WAC, Conference USA and the American. They struggled for traction but won 10 games in 2019 (under Sonny Dykes) and have been bowl-eligible for four consecutive years.
(Endowment source: SMU investments office)
While SDSU enables a continuation of Southern California interest and Pac-12 recruitment, SMU opens up an untapped new market in the Texas metropolis of Dallas. A flag planted in Texas could lead to exploration of additional expansion potential in the region.

In the future, it is certainly possible that UCLA and/or USC might discover that BIG Ten travel requirements are long-term undesirable.

For today, San Diego State and Southern Methodist University have managed to make the grade, and are increasingly garnering the support they require by current Pac-12 university members, and expansion appears to be certain.

Re: God No! Peruna Law Go Away!

Sand Aggies, Cougars seem most obsessed with it. Frogs to a lesser degree. Sand Aggies have to be feeling down, all of their true loves, UT, A&M left them. Didn't have Bullock to protect them this time. Now they are in a leftovers conference with commuter schools, UCF, UH, Cincy, and we're being mentioned for an arguably classier conference. Cougars instead of being happy to be in a P5 finally, somehow can't accept that we deserve to be in one too. I like to remind them about us beating them last year. Quite frankly, we should have beaten them the prior year, if Sonny had squib kicked.
