just reviewing the 2002 Stats and I never really focused on the fact that Bartel completed more than 60% of his passes-not bad-not bad at all! Has a freshman ever accomplished that at SMU? I seriously doubt it.

Not bad indeed! Especially considering that outside of Cardwell and the under-used Hampton, he was throwing to a lot of freshmen and sophomores.

From Ponyfans.com own database:

Romo finished his career second in career pass attempts (1,034), second in completions (601) and third in yardage (6,041). He also is the school’s all-time
leader in pass completion percentage (58.1) among SMU quarterbacks with at least 600 career attempts and he’s second in career touchdown passes (35).
Romo attempted 50 or more passes in four games (more than any passer in SMU history), three times eclipsing the 60-pass mark, including a career-high 64
attempts in the so-called “Miracle on Mockingbird,” a 31-30 win over Connecticut at Ownby Stadium that marked the Ponies’ first win since the return of
football in 1989. Romo’s 450 passing yards against North Texas in 1989 remains the highest total ever thrown by an SMU quarterback in a single game.

Hixon, Livingston and Meredith couldn't play as freshmen (NCAA rules back then). What kind of numbers did Mike Ford put up his freshman year? Meyers almost never ran the ball that year. I saw them at Penn State and they threw something like 48 passes that game. I have no clue about his completion percentage.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
