Russell Carter Announced On 2024 Ballot For Induction Into College Football Hall of Fame

DALLAS (SMU) - Russell Carter is on the 2024 College Football Hall of Fame ballot, The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced Monday.

The list includes 78 players and nine coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 101 players and 32 coaches from the divisional ranks.

Carter was a football and track & field standout for SMU from 1980-83. Carter was a 1983 unanimous First-Team All-American who helped the Mustangs win NCAA-recognized National Championships in 1981 and 1982. Carter had seven interceptions in 1981 and 1983, both tied for second in a season at SMU. The three-time All-SWC performer led Mustangs to consecutive league titles in 1981-82 and is the Mustangs all-time career leader in interceptions with 18.

Carter was drafted in the first round (10th overall) of the 1984 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. Carter was inducted into the SMU Hall of Fame in 2013.

He was a crucial member of the 1983 NCAA Indoor and Outdoor National Championship teams and was an All-American on the indoor mile relay team and the outdoor 1600-meter relay team in 1983.

With 10 Hall of Fame inductees hailing from the Hilltop, SMU is tied for 29th-most CFB HOF honorees with Texas A&M, Iowa, NC State and Syracuse.
