Conference coaches in C-USA voted the University of Houston Cougars 10th - next to last - in the preseason poll released Monday at the C-USA preseason foootball meetings in Memphis, TN. TCU, defending co-champion, got eight first-place votes and 115 points to edge Southern Mississippi in the team balloting. The Golden Eagles had 106 points and one vote for first.
The NCAA has approved Florida A&M's application to move its football program to Div. 1-A, and the historically black university could be playing at college football's highest level by 2004. No other historically black college is in Div.1-A. The school's move makes the Rattlers ineligible for the 2003 Div.1-AA playoffs and the 2003 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference football title.
The media has selected Florida State as the conference favorite in preseason balloting at the ACC Football Kickoff. The Seminoles, who have won 10 league titles during their 11 years in the conference, received 35 first-place votes and 672 points overall to edge North Carolina State (664) in the closest preseason poll since FSU entered the league.
