Hope for WAC wins

Postby The PonyGrad » Wed Sep 24, 2003 11:04 am

As the season is shaping up there is one thing that stands out as "working" on the SMU team, and that is Rush Defense. If that is true (SMU is rated #34 in rush defense,) then we should do well against teams that are having trouble passing. Here are some of our opponents and their pass efficiency ratings: Rice #117 (out of 117,) UTEP #116, Fresno #103, SJSU #100.

Nevada is not one of these and unless we make some major fixes to our offense and special teams this will be a tough game.

Regarding making such fixes, I like the suggestion by Bennett that Rushbrook might punt. (SMU is #116 in net punting.) He says the kid can punt, thought we should be able to find someone to punt better that what we have seen recently out of SMU punters. Also Rushbrook would be a big asset in covering those punts, being a former DB, and you might even throw in a fake punt.

FRESNO played some tough teams to get that ranking, especially without their best QB.

SJSU happened to have played FLORIDA.

You are correct, Fresno had a tough schedule so far and Pinegar should be back by the time we play them so this match-up may not benefit by this comparison but it will be at home... assuming that is a benefit. Fresno will not travel as many as OSU.

My point is that, statisticly speaking, we may have a positive match-up with several teams.

And we will hopefully be fixing some of the things that were exposed vs. OSU so our defensive balance may get better.
