Ford Field??

Postby spreethug » Wed Dec 03, 2003 8:29 pm

Ford field is a very nice facility that we have but I was wondering if we started to sell out games they should close off the grassy hill with seats. That could make it a very hostile enviroment if we sold out. How many would it hold then?

45,000 is your answer (from SMUMustangs.com):

Gerald J Ford Stadium and the Paul B. Loyd All-Sports Center mark the most significant facility additions to SMU's campus in years, possibly since Dallas Hall became SMU's first building. On September 2, 2000, the Mustangs played the first game on campus in nine years. The building is named for Gerald J. Ford, a 1966 SMU graduate and a 1969 SMU Law graduate. Ford , a Texas panhandle native, now is the CEO, Chairman of the Board and a principal shareholder of a west coast bank. He donated $20 million toward the stadium that now bears his name. To answer a common question, Gerald J. Ford was never president of the United States of America. Gerald R. Ford followed Richard Nixon and preceded Jimmy Carter in that role. Incidentally, the "J." stands for Joseph.

The stadium was designed in the Collegiate-Georgian style that is consistent with the rest of SMU's campus. There are 32,000 seats, and the stadium has the possibility of expansion to 45,000 by converting the stadium's horse shoe shape into an oval. There are 240 preferred club level seats and 240 more seats in 23 luxury suites, loaded with extras such as televisions, air conditioning, and refrigerators. Also housed in the three-level press box will be a working press area that can accommodate 125 working print, radio and television media.

Another great aspect of the stadium is across the field where a student section has a capacity for 4,500 students. Located just one section over is the Mustang Band, who carry the slogan "The Hub of SMU Spirit" with pride.

The field lies 25 feet below ground level, with half of the stadium's seats below ground level to be less obtrusive to the surrounding neighborhood and SMU campus.

The stadium was also designed to be able to hold a regulation soccer field, an important element to SMU's hope to host an NCAA Soccer Tournament, or possibly matches in the 2012 Olympics, if Dallas' bid is successful.

The Paul B. Loyd, Jr. All-Sports Center is attached at the northwest corner of the stadium. The 124,000 square foot facility hosts the offices and locker rooms for the Football, Track & Field, and Soccer teams, as well as built in space for a yet-to-be-added sport. On the lowest level is the weight room where all the student athletes train. It also holds the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center, facility staffed with tutors and study aids, offered free to all SMU students.

Paul B. Loyd, Jr. is also an SMU alumnus. While at SMU, Loyd was the captain of the football team in 1967, a year that the Mustangs won the Cotton Bowl Classic. After graduating from SMU with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Economics degree, he moved on to Harvard, where he received an M.B.A. in the School of Business. He then went into various offshore drilling ventures. He is now the Chairman and CEO of the R&B Falcon Corporation, the world's largest offshore drilling company.

The $57 million stadium and all sport center is the crowning jewel of SMU's Capital Campaign, a fundraising effort that has been enormously successful, and includes many new buildings, and major renovations to much of the rest of campus.

That's always been the plan I'd heard: build the nicest stadium in Texas, start winning, then close in the horseshoe.
Let's get those wins, and make the place a real noisy place!

Heritage Hall (thanks 50's PONY):

Along with Gerald J. Ford Stadium and the Paul B. Loyd All-Sports Center, SMU's Heritage Hall opened its doors in September 2000 as a lasting monument to the athletic excellence and tradition at SMU.

The opening exhibit – a collection of the works of legendary photographer Jim Laughead and cartoonist Bill McClanahan – just scratches the surface of the amazing array of SMU memorabilia that continues to be collected.

Laughead and McClanahan both used SMU athletics as a canvas throughout careers that spanned five decades. Laughead is most famous for his self-branded "huck-n-buck" pose action photos. Traveling to campuses all across the nation, Laughead captured all of the greats of his era on film. On the SMU campus – and on the road with the football team – his unprecedented access brings you closer to the players coaches than is possible today.

McClanahan's works are most recognized by their Southwest Conference mascot caricatures and his weekly fixture, the "Fearless Forecast," which appeared every Friday in The Dallas Morning News. With pen and ink, he captured the essence of the unique rivalries and personalities that made up the old SWC.

In preparation for the permanent Heritage Hall display, dozens of items that have been hidden for years have been discovered and are being reconditioned, but we all know that there is much more out there. For that reason, we are soliciting any and all items of significance from the SMU community and beyond. There are several donation options and all items will be handled with the utmost care as the museum's permanent design is developed.

If you would like to make a financial contribution or have items – or can lead us to items – you would like us to consider for display, please e-mail us and be sure to include a full description of the item(s) along with your contact information.

Items that may be of special significance to you or your family can also be either duplicated or accepted on loan. Of particular interest are one-of-a-kind personal items, recorded material (including color or black-and-white home movies of SMU sporting events), pictures, uniforms and equipment, ticket stubs, game programs, stadium souvenirs such as buttons, pins or pennants, and newspaper and magazine clippings. Anything we receive will be considered for initial and/or future display.
