UH's Art Briles Signs New Contract

Postby MrMustang1965 » Fri Dec 19, 2003 3:36 pm

Cougars head football coach Art Briles has agreed to sign a new five-year contract. It will replace the five-year deal Briles signed last December prior to his first season at UH. The Cougars' 7-5 record produced their Hawaii Bowl matchup with the University of Hawaii (8-5) on Christmas Day. It's the Cougars' first postseason appearance sinc the 1996 Liberty Bowl. UH's turnaround from a winless season to a bowl in just two years (!) has been done by only six other NCAA Div.1-A programs, including Hawaii (0-11 in 1998 to 9-4 in 1999). COME ON, MUSTANGS! ADD YOUR NAME TO THIS LIST!

Coach Briles first season as HC at UH followed 3 seasons as the running backs coach at Texas Tech. Before that, he was head coach at Stephenville High School for 12 years. The school won four state titles, set a national high school record for total offense of 8,650 yards and went 90-2-1 during a six-year run.
