Redshirt Status

Postby Lawgrad » Wed Feb 19, 2003 5:11 pm

Does anyone have a list of the players that were redshirted last year, and their hoped-for impact on this season? These guys are going to be one of the most important factors in the Ponies success next year, with the graduation losses this year.

Randy Dedman and Brent Karrington were both on the travel squad last season. They both were able to keep their red shirt status by the iron man status of Lute and Allan. Randy will probably report at 270 and Brent about 280.Randy is likely a DT/NG and Brent is either a DE/DT/NG.

Is it possible Adami will be moved to DE for the 2003 season?

No.

He's the best returning defensive tackle we have, and at times, he was the best lineman last year. He's a little undersized to play DT, but he's a ferocious player with unbelievable strength and quickness for his size. Moving him would be crazy.
I think he and Iremeia-Stansbury are the two players who have starting spots locked up.

Melvin Williams certainly will get a lot of time at the other end. Some combination of Karrington (unless he goes outside to defensive end), Denman, Marcus Walker and Darrin Johnson will rotate at the defensive tackle spots with Adami. Johnson is tentatively listed as second-team entering spring drills.

To the best of my knowledge, this year's redshirted players were:

Anthony Barnett
Mike Benson
Jamar Bey
Reggie Carrington
Randy Denman
James Elliott
Happy Gilmore
Martin Guidry
Mark Hodges
Cole Horton
Darrin Johnson
Brent Karrington
Ryan Kennedy
Dustin Morton
Chris Poulos
Hulsey Smith
Chris Urbanus

Anyone I'm forgetting?

Is Johnny Fitzgerald still around? If so, is not he a redshirt freshman?

And these guys were all on the 2002 roster. How about -

Tommy Adams * WR Southlake, TX
Heath Burnett * LB Crandall, TX
Stephen Cade * WR Birdville, TX
James Collins * LB Kansas
Johnnie Fitzgerald RB Red Oak, TX
(Repeated from last post)
Duke Hasson * QB Austin, TX
Jacob Jones * DE Jacksonville, TX
Chad Meacham OL Houston, TX
Micheal Mitchell * DB Golleyville, TX
Justin Rogers * DE Commerce, TX
Zac Simmonds * DT Oklahoma
Matt Young * TB Houston, TX

* Indicates apparent walk-on.

Are the walk-ons coming back? Are there others not shown on the old roster? Are any of them expected to earn playing time?

I heard that Denman was moving to offense and Fitzgerald may be a GREAT running back.

Justin Rogers is a scolie player that was a redshirt. He is also a very strong DE playing time candidate.

Corso,

I don't respond to many messages, but your slight on my son was obvious to me. The Happy Gilmore insertion where his name fell alphabetically was no accident.

I know you post great stuff, another reason why I was surprised by the stray comment.

I have been in contact with the webmaster via e-mail and they are working on the problems right now trying to iron out the glitches....be patient just a little while longer.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Corso and Pony Fans,

It is my turn to apologize. The reference to Happy Gilmore where my son's name would have fit alphabetically was a coincidence both in name and with recent innuendos from other sources. We are just a bit too sensitive, I guess. I know now that you were referring to Robert Gilmore.

Sorry for the misunderstanding

PPP/PPM I'm as confused as Corso is. What exactly did he do that has upset you?Corso's a vet on this board who is always supportive of the players and team.By the way,how is your son doing? What are his plans? There are many of us who supported him and were disappointed when you reported he would not be playing for SMU.
