Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??Hmmm-I wonder why no one has mentioned that Coach Phil Bennett's opener against Navy last year was one of the worst coached games in modern SMU History. SMU was completely and totally unprepared to play in every aspect of the game. Considering all the false blame handed to Cavan over the last few years I would think it probably had to be one of the most disappointing too to most of you.
"With a quarter of a tank of gas, we can get everything we need right here in DFW." -SMU Head Coach Chad Morris
When momentum starts rolling downhill in recruiting-WATCH OUT.
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??1997 on Thursday night ESPN with a bowl bid on the line vs. 0-10 TCU. I had dreamed of a night like that since I started following SMU Football (1992). Thinking about that loss still puts a lump in my throat.
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??That Navy game was the first in Bennett's career as a head coach. It's too bad he wasn't perfectly prepared for his first day on the job like the rest of us are.
Worst loss: 95-21 to Houston.
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??If my memory serves me right, Cavan held Donte Womack out of that '97 TCU game to punish him for breaking a team rule or something like that. Instead the whole team and our fans suffered. Running laps would have been a better punishment.
[This message has been edited by PK (edited 07-09-2003).] SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??Actually the most disappointing loss was not a loss but a tie to Arkansas with the National Title on the line. It might as well have been a loss because it moved us to #2 and Alabama to #1 and Joe Paterno picked the Sugar Bowl to play Alabama for the National Title which Penn State won. That was the most bittersweet moment in SMU history.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??That's nice, but the question was WORST SINCE THE DP
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??EastStang, Penn State lost to Bama 42-21 in BHM that year (1982). Bear Bryant coached his final game in 1982 in the Liberty Bowl, beating Illinois. That was the problem, PSU had a blowout loss and SMU had only the tie against Arkansas.
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??Stallion, I'd say Bennett had them prepared for Texas Tech.. the next game.
That Navy game had to be the worst played game I'd ever seen, however. Both teams looked liked 2A high school clubs... bad ones at that. *shudder* [This message has been edited by UNFMustang06 (edited 07-09-2003).]

What is the relationship with you and Cavin? Just curious since you are such a cheerleader...
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??I agree, gassers for Womack might have been more appropriate. I was also there. That game at TCU was the last time I got to see the Mustangs in person. I can't remember exactly how realistic our bowl chances were, but at 6-4 going in, they were the best in the modern era. SMU was just looked like they didn't give a __. Flanigan was stinking it up that game, and I just sat by myself in the flat-out disgusting TCU stadium and wanted to vomit my dog on the rubes sitting in front of me. National TV. Anyway, lets hope we're in a similar position going into the Frogs game this year.
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??Wanting to vomit our dogs? personally I'd rather be in a better mood when we play TCew. I'd like to see a good game; we probably won't catch 'em this year, but in the next year or two, the balance feels like it's about to shift for the first time in a while.
Support the Commitment! We're all SMU Mustangs fans- we should all be committed!
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??We didn't have much hope for a Bowl unless we played in the WAC Championship game...
Back then the WAC only had three bowl games = Champ: Cotton or Holiday (Pac 10 took the other spot) WAC #2: Insight.com WAC #3: Las Vegas The Las Vegas bowl had already invited Air Force before that week begun (they were 10-1, but finished in 2nd place to CSU due to a head-to-head loss). We could go to the WAC Championship game (and earn a bowl bid) with a win combined with both a Utah and New Mexico loss. It would have made it a four way tie and we owned that tie breaker (we beat Utah and Rice, the other team)... We lost on Thursday; Utah was upset by BYU, but New Mexico had a big 4th quarter comeback and beat UTEP. Sure would have been nice though...
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??The post death penalty disappointments are almost too numerous to count, but I'd have to agree with comments that the loss to an 0-10 TCU squad to end the '97 season, the beating they gave us to end 2000 and being routed by Navy last year have to be the top 3. Ican't say the Ole Miss loss was a huge disappointment because it would have been a huge upset to have beaten them.
Bottom line is there have been plenty of disappointments. How may pleasant surprises has SMU football given us since the death penalty? Mostly a few "almost wins" and of course the "revenge" win over Houston for Homecoming in '92, but IMO the 9-2-2000 opening of Ford Stadium is by far and away our most glorious moment to date in the post death penalty era.
Re: POLL: Most dissapointing loss post DP??Hey SOUTHLAND:
The WEEDEATER INDEPENDENCE BOWL was a lock if we won at TCU ... we would have played (and been killed by) LSU that year. The 4 way tie you are speaking of...had we beaten TCU 'that' year, we would have had to play SAN JOSE (the night lights went out) at Highlander stadium to see if we would have been the WAC champ...end the end, we lost to TCU and only played 10 games (I think to finish 4-5-1, the year we played Cal State Fullerton and we would have had to have a waiver to play in a bowl in the WAC champ game). -- We didn't have much hope for a Bowl unless we played in the WAC Championship game...
