Johnny - you get no points for style - and your assesment is basically correct as to what needs to happen to stay in div 1 - but I think your hostility is misdirected. Do you think Copeland and others in the athletic dept. want a HARDER job then they have? You think it is easy or fun to pick up the phone and call for sponsors and pull together marketing ideas when the team is 0 fer the season? - Fun or easy to represent this football team a the highest level right now? they don't deserve sympathy - its what they are paid for - but they are doing what they can do - and the word is the changes you outlined are exactly wht is underway - do you expect a paid announcement in the DMN - "SMU lowers admission standards, creates athlete friendly major and targets JUCO's?" instead of posting a flamer to make yourself feel better - write e-mail or go visit Turner or one of our board members and ask them if these things are underway. Until then - just attend or don't attend but spare us the misdirected and childish name calling.

Johnny, Johnny, Johnny...

Isn't this the same post I read from you last month? And the month before that? And the month before that? (Repeat ad infinitum) Johnny, come up with some new schtick. You are now as predictable as Stallion in the basic content of your messages.

And by the way, why is it that when anyone says they have a 'realistic' view of anything, it always means 'pessimistic' or 'negative'? It's the same pre-emptive strike that liberals (typically, although not exclusively) always resort to when discussing anything: "Oh, you're just closed-minded." That way they move focus away from the relative merit of their argument.

because 14 years of pessimism has been proven that the only realistic expectation is pessimism.

Stallion, you are constructive, where Johnny (flamer) isn't. Still, this post for you is a bit cynical; where he is behaving like an under-developed Junior High Student.

Results to the contrary, there is some evidence/reports that we are moving toward your model, abeit, not very fast.

I knew my post would not be very popular amoung many on this board. I do not post to gain 'friends' or acceptance from people. Frankly, I do not need friends or everyone's approval on this board. I want nothing more than for SMU to be successful in football and men's basketball and while my opinions may not be popular they are truthful and accurate. It appauls me to read posts in which people defend the athletic department's policies. If we were winning then I would say 'do not fix it' Unfortuneately, we have not had success since I became a fan in 1992. With respect to basketball, sure we can beat UT-Pan American and San Jose St. but can we beat Tulsa, TCU, Fresno St. or Hawaii when it counts? Under Dement, the answer is no. It is his fault entirely? No. But I thought the University revealed a plan called the 'Commitment'? Would Dement's lack of NCAA appearances allow him to keep his job at any of the Big 12 schools or TCU for that matter? No. What is our 'Commitment'? I am confused and upset. It is a shame there are not more passionate fans like me...the one and only Johnny Rock.

Yes, it does take courage to shoot from the hip. Very impressive. Not much depth, but lots of courage.

You are right WaterPony. I just make stuff up. I guess the winless season and lack of success in football and no NCAA appearances by Dement are illusions. Keep dreaming pal.

Baylor has not been doing well as of late in the two marquis sports of football and men's basketball. HOWEVER, at least BU is trying. The Bliss hire turned out to be a fiasco, but back at the time he was brought in, he had some pretty good credentials. The new football coach Guy Morriss was the head coach at an SEC school before being hired to Baylor. Even though Kevin Steele was a total bust, he was being paid top dollar to do the job.

SMU seems content to hire assistants and hope that they turn into good head coaches. Sometimes you need to OVERpay and OVERhire to get back on track.

Johnny: I will repeat that you really are clueless. You keep saying the people who work in our athletic dept are morons. Do you really not have a clue where the power resides? Do you think that if the A.D. and his coaches could dictate to the Trustees that money be taken from the endowment to fund new programs that would help us recruit better athletes that they wouldn't make that happen immediately? Do you think that if they controlled their budget they wouldn't significantly increase the amount SMU "commits" to athletics? You may think you are offering some pearls of wisdom to the rest of us who blindly support this program, but honestly, you really do need to get a clue because your posts leave many people thinking you are a complete [deleted]. Why don't you join the campaign that somebody suggested and direct a letter to each and every one of the Trustees. Let them know you are upset, but don't blame the folks in the athletic dept that don't make the policies. Those people are just trying to figure out how to compete given the limitations they face compared to their competition.
