If word gets out that SMU can go as high as 4 million/year, we might get some attention not just from coordinators or G5 coaches, but maybe even some HC from the lower tiers of the P5. Now, I'm not saying it's true, but it is plausible that we would leak this with no real expectation of ever hiring Mack.

Where is the purple hippo and whose private jet are we tracking this week?

No one denies the "rumors" and no deal goes in a straight line. Different insiders have different agendas. Some want Mack, some Chad Morris...
