A proper grass field will be graded to have the center line of the field slightly higher than the outside edges to provide proper drainage of rainfall off the field and not have puddles in the middle of the field. Artificial turf is graded flat with a drainage system constructed under the turf. Evidently baseball fields are graded flat with no provisions for drainage...thus puddles in the middle of the playing area.

A lot of MLB stadiums have vacuum systems to drain the field. That’s why a lot of games still play in the rain.
