Remember just a couple of years back when Aledo's Jonathan Gray was the No. 1 high school football player in the US? He could do anything, anywhere, and after heavy recruiting, decided to be the one to make the U of Texas a national champion. Well, how's that gone? He's a starter, to be sure, but only their second best runner behind Brown, and that's not saying much. No one player is ever going to make that much difference.

True, the Top Programs do not rely on simply 1 star athlete, that is why SMU signed 3 NFL caliber RBs in 1 class, 1 of whom went on to the HOF, another who led his team to their 1st SB.

The other guy beat out James and ED as a freshman. Sadly, he had a career ending injury before the Pony Express really got rolling.

Charles Waggoner was about the No. 25 rated recruit in Texas his Senior year and ran for about 650 yards as a freshman through about 9 games

I watched all the practices the year that Dickerson, James, and Waggoner were freshman. Waggoner was the most impressive, by far. The only thing that he didn't have that Eric did was the top end speed but he was much quicker hitting the hole. It was a real shame that he hurt his neck returning the opening kick-off the last game of that year against Texas Tech. Thankfully, he wasn't paralyzed by the hit.

Here are 2 articles (Part I and Part 2) about Waggoner:

Impressive mudsling all around the SWC tonite
Its like the old days
"Story goes like this:

Stidham lives with a Dude
Stidham moved out of parents house because they hate Tech
Dude owns Sporting good store
Briles invests in Store
Dude used to work as an Assistant with Briles
Stidham works at Store
Dude bought Stidham a truck
Dude planned to open new Store in Lubbock
Stidham broke up with girlfriend who goes to Tech
Girlfriend hates Tech
Dude played QB for Briles
Dude got fired at High School for fraternizing with underaged student
Tech Coach Eric Morris got in verbal argument last weekend when Dude was told Stidham might redshirt
Dude said Stidham would transfer

This is great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reminds me of Classic Johnny Be Good movie staring Anthony Michael Hall
Long live the SWC-wished we had internet back then
Don't know if any of it is true-picked it up in about 20 minutes on the usual SWC message boards

Funny stuff, Stallion. But I have heard similar rumors about "Dude" (although not to your extent) that could affect Stidham and his eligibility. The few Tech fans that I know who aren't furious about the decommitment think they might have dodged a bullet (ala us and Mudiay).

All wild speculation, nothing remotely concrete, take all with a grain of salt. Just thought I'd pass along

When in the recent past have we been in the final heat with those two for a recruit? Great news regardless....come to SMU and be the "bell cow"...

It is awesome. It is a super long shot. Honestly we wouldn't have a supporting cast but everyone would know that. Minimal disappointment possibility with high potential to surpass expectations here...

I can honestly say that I don't understand why anyone would go to Tech when they had other options.

Tech:
1) Mediocre School
2) Lubbock is in the middle of nowhere
3) It is hot in the summer and cold/windy in the winter.

From a FB perspective, I would rather trust my QB/Son with Briles/Sumlin/Patterson/Morris before Coach Bro.

Kids go there b/c you can play Big 12 football and never have to put worth any effort in the classroom to stay eligible.

As much as we appreciate where we live as we get older, when you're an 18 year old athlete you only care about your sport (going pro), having fun (parties), girls and being treated like a king. Schools like Tech and Okie St. can provide kids with this much easier than schools in destination cities.

Look at Kentucky in hoops. You have these kids from Chicago, NYC and Philly go there because Cal has created, or continued an environment where it very easy for these kids to get what they want without any trouble. They don't go there because Kentucky is this awesome place. The same thing goes on at many of these P5 schools located in towns that we would never dream of living. In Lexington or Lubbock or Stillwater the elite athletes are THE celebs in those towns. These same level athletes in LA, Dallas, Chicago and ATL, not so much.

From the story above if the kid goes to Baylor no issue but if the kid comes to SMU you will see months of an investigation into improper benefits as a HS student by the NCAA and local hack job reporters eventually leading to him being declared ineligible about a week before the season starts. NCAA won't care if it is at a P5 school that has been winning but will throw the book at the kid if he comes to a place like SMU.

Yes, Perinea's law.

At least he was committed to Texas Tech and not Texas - at least from Baylor's point of view. Tech has a little less stroke with the NCAA than Tech.

Good to know Tech's WDNWHA Committee is keeping busy.

When are you people going to realize that the majority of student athletes really don't care what college name is on their degree. These kids come to play sports and right now Tech, Baylor, TCU, and even Houston are better options than good ole SMU.
