Welcome to Big D,
As a good host should, we hope to welcome you with the same sort of reception you afforded the Mustangs last year.
As far as Southwestern dining is concerned, you've come to Mecca.
If you're looking for good food without the frills, I'd suggest:
BBQ: Try Sonny Brian's. A Texas landmark. The original is on Inwood road just north of Hwy 114/183. Or, if you'd like the same great food in a less dilapidated shack, there's another Sonny Brian's on the NE corner of Inwood and Lover's Ln. Both are fairly close to campus.
For Tex/Mex: Herrera's on Maple, just east of Oak Lawn. It's BWOB and authentic as is gets. If you want something a bit more unusual, try Gloria's on Lemmon (Tex/Mex and Salvadorian) or Mattito's on Cedar Springs. Or hit the grandaddy, Javier's on north McKinney just before it terminates into the Park Cities. It's a nicer place that'll run a bit more, but the food is unbelievable.
Just as an FYI, there's another couple of local joints for your consideration. Campisi's on Mockingbird offers great Pizza and is a local landmark. Also, if you follow Mockingbrid from Ford Stadium east, then turn South on Greenville Ave., there's a whole slew of small, funky places to eat that offer great food. No mention of local cuisine would be complete without mentioning Snuffer's cheese fries.
