HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University Director of Athletics Bob Marcum announced Saturday that Marshall has completed its 2005 football schedule that includes Virginia Tech and Kansas State.

The Thundering Herd will play six home games including the season opener at home against NCAA Division 1-AA National Semifinalist William & Mary at 7:00 p.m. Thursday, September 1, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.

William & Mary finished 11-3, was ranked sixth in the nation, and advanced to the semifinals of the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs in 2004. The Tribe also produced four Associated Press All-Americans.

Following the home opener, Marshall will play host to Big 12 member Kansas State on Sept. 10 before finishing non-conference play by traveling to defending Atlantic Coast Conference Champion Virginia Tech on Sept. 17.

The Thundering Herd will host Southern Mississippi, East Carolina, Southern Methodist, and Alabama-Birmingham in Conference USA action, and is slated to travel to conference foes Memphis, Tulane, Central Florida, and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP).

The complete Conference USA schedule with dates and times will be announced this spring.

Marshall's 2005 schedule includes five teams that went to bowls in 2004. Ninth-ranked Virginia Tech (10-3) won the Sugar Bowl, Memphis (8-3) appeared in the GMAC Bowl, Southern Mississippi (7-5) won the New Orleans Bowl, UAB (7-5) appeared in the Hawaii Bowl, and UTEP (8-4) appeared in the Houston Bowl.

that's a pretty rough schedule. The home dates with SMU and ECU are undoubtedly circled as the only gimmes on the board. Let's just hope we have a more competitive bunch next year because Marshall's a tough place to visit.

Hel$, I don't know. Perhaps your "JUCO U" remark was tongue-in-cheek. But after all the complaining on this site about our lack of JUCO recruiting, now the coaches sign a hand full of guys from the JUCO ranks and out comes JUCO comments. I thought we're recruiting 'em to win a few more games.

I'm a big fan of bldg this program from the HS level 'up', but I also know Romo & Eckert were instrumental in the "W's" this season.

Hey SWC2010...the big smiley at the end of the comment should have been the give-a-way. We have always self-righteously called other schools JUCO U because they actually had a lot of JUCOs and we didn't have any. Long term, we need a steady stream of HS recruits to build a good program, but as you noted a few well place JUCOs are not a bad thing at all.

Marshall could be called NQ U over the years. They've apparently cleaned up their act somewhat which is why they got the CUSA invite. And yes that will be a tough away game for us. I see that no date has yet been set. If it is in October, I might be able to take that long weekend drive to Huntington, W Va. I suspect they are trying to schedule us for their Homecoming game.
