Your Best Game

Just curious as to what the best SMU game you have ever witnissed firsthand. Mine, being that they completely sucked the entire time I was there, is our win against San Jose St. last year.

Wow! the 2004 Classic between Smu and San Jose St. Easily the best game by far that I have seen was the 1981 SMU/Texas Tech game in Lubbock. See-Saw Battle, high scoring game and perhaps the greatest play in SMU history to preserve an undefeated season anf first trip to the Cotton Bowl in 14 years. The SMU texas games were nice but the games were not as good or dramatic.

Cotton Bowl win over Dan Marino and the Pitt Panther. They didn't look that great on that day.. but enough to win. Hard conditions to play in that day.. cold as hell and terrible conditions overall.

Oct. 22, 1983.. in front of a sold out crowd at Texas Stadium. SMU and Texas battled in an incredible game. Texas ranked #2 in and SMU ranked #9 in the nation. Texas won 15 - 12 with the heroics of Todd Dodge and Jerry Gray.. but an incredible game.

SMU first win over a SWC opponent after the death penalty.. sweet victory over TCU.

Great game over KU to open Ford Stadium..

All good memories..

I'm with you, Stalion..I pity the folks who list SJSU or KU as their "greatest moment"..wow!!!! Mine would have to be the "SMU is not a passing team"..thanks Frank "SMU will not win a game for 10 years after this death P." Broyles...SMU V. TEXAS..Austin..1982 30 - 17 W, baby!!, and the '78 comeback in WACO..Mike Ford to ET..for those of you who list Vic Viloria as the best ever, that would be Emanuel Tolbert. Long Live [deleted] Blaylock.

There was a game in Waco in 1984, I think, in which Don King (obviously before his tall hair) brought the Mustangs back from a couple touchdowns behind in the fourth quarter against Baylor, hitting Ron Morris for the winning TD in the rain with the clocking winding down. Back then, SWC games always meant something, no matter who the opponent was. Well worth the day trip down I-35.

Three of them occurred in 1974.
The A&M Game where we beat the Aggies in Dallas.
Rice where we won the game in the last few seconds on an Arthur Wittington kickoff return.
Arkansas, where we tied after another Wittington miracle return.
The 1973 victory over Baylor where Keith Bobo brought them back from a 28 point deficit.
The 1983 Cotton Bowl victory over Pitt.

Nov. 20, 1982. SMU 17 Arkansas 17. Sold out deafeningly loud crowd in Texas Stadium in front of a national TV audience, the Mustangs tie the Razorbacks to win the SWC Championship, and a trip to the Cotton Bowl.
We were ranked in the top 5 probably #2, and Arkansas in the top 10 I believe. Best game I"ve attended.

1968 Astro-Bluebonnet Bowl win over Oklahoma. The 1975 comback win against Baylor. It was the last game of the season and Dave Smith's last game. The 1980 SMU-Texas when unranked SMU knocked off #2 Texas. The Sept. 17, 1966 26-7 win over Illinois in Dallas (the first SMU game I ever attended and the weekend I first met Dr. Harold Jeskey).

I agree with the 1982 Texas game the Cotton Bowl game with Pitt and the 1974 Texas A&M game, but I'd like to put in a word for the 1972 Florida game. It was played in Tampa and the Ponies were not supposed to win, but we shut the Gators' running game down cold. and took a 21-14 victory.

I still remember that UF had the ball on 4th-and-inches inside the SMU 20 when Robert Popelka met their big fullback Vince Kendrick head up at the line of scrimmage and stopped his [deleted] for no gain. That got my motor running.

Interestingly, Florida had a quarterback named Chan Gailey.

You might be right about San Jose not being a great game compared to the good ole days, but we can not help it that we are not an old bitter fart yet,........we're just bitter.

I loved going to the dirrrrty shreve in 97 and vomitting out of excitment, not disgust.
