Where's Boren Going?

Postby MrMustang1965 » Wed Aug 03, 2005 2:41 am

DMN quotes Coach Phil saying that OL Justin Boren is transferring. Anyone know where?

Reality Check: OU doesn't take second string transfers from SMU who can't even crack the starting lineup. I hope you were joking.

Ah, yes, scenic Natchitoches, Louisiana!

Looks like he made a pretty good choice, if the Demons make it to the SLC championship again.

DEL LAGO RESORT, Texas - A year ago when the preseason Southland Conference football polls were revealed, Northwestern State and Sam Houston State were picked third and fourth, respectively, by the league's head coaches. The Demons and Bearkats responded by sharing the league title with identical 4-1 records and advancing to the NCAA I-AA playoffs, marking the 12th time in the last 14 years the Southland has sent multiple teams to the 16-team tournament.

Now, Northwestern State has been picked as the overwhelming favorite to win the 2005 Southland Conference crown. Coach Stoker has 43 letterwinners and 14 offensive and defensive starters returning from last year's 8-4 team in which to build around.

Six of the seven head coaches voted the Demons first while Stephen F. Austin State University garnered one first-place vote. In the annual sports information directors' poll, Northwestern was also credited with six first-place finishes while Texas State University took one nod to finish on top.

Texas State has been picked second in both polls, narrowly edging Stephen F. Austin in the coaches' predicted order and placing ahead of third-place McNeese State University in the SID picks. The coaches' crystal ball has McNeese State finishing fourth, Sam Houston State falling to fifth place and Nicholls State University tying league newcomer Southeastern Louisiana University for sixth place.

The SIDs see SHSU in fourth, SFA finishing fifth and Nicholls ending the year ahead of SLU.

Northwestern State will be looking for its fifth SLC regular-season title of all time and fourth since the 1997 season. Having shared the last three crowns (1997, 1998 and 2004) they have won, the Demons will be looking for an outright title. On top of its success in the regular season, Northwestern State can boast about its five appearances in the past eight NCAA I-AA playoffs.

An article in this morning's Austin American Statesman about Texas State in San Marcos said that Boren had transferred there.

Correctimundo!

from the AA-S: "Since the spring game, the Bobcats have added two transfers -- offensive lineman Justin Boren (6 feet, 4 inches, 340 pounds) from SMU and safety Daniel Varvel (6-3, 215) from Arizona State."

Boren will still get to play against the Aggies. TAMU plays Texas State on Sept. 24, one week after SMU travels to College Station.

340?!?!? Wasn't he supposed to be down to 295 or so in the spring? That's a lot to add. Who does he think he is .... Justin Rogers?
Good luck to Boren at NSU.

Uh, no...Texas State - San Marcos (formerly Southwest Texas State University) is still Div. 1-AA (Southland Conference). They're also on NCAA probation for recruitment violations.
