To take it a step farther, there are a considerable number of states that have their names derived from Indian names. Pursuant to NCAA rules, the state sponsored universities that this applies to should not be able to display their state names on their jerseys.

Utah
Illinois
Texas (derived from Tejas, an indian name)

Any more?

I guess Pontiac can no longer advertise on NCAA events. So too Oneida.
Also, Kentucky is no longer allowed and anything with Mississippi has to be out.

Arkansas is derived from Quapaw so they are out too! Plus I think the Native Americans ate Razorback in earlier times so that is definitely savage.

Don't forget that you may not refer to "Miami" either.

Alcorn State is a traditionally African American college. Perhaps they ought to adopt a really un-PC name, using the more than 20% of their students exception. Imagine the NCAA PC police having to deal with with a team calling itself the N word, or the J word, or the P word.

over 1/2 the state names come from indian words, some from indian tribes.

http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0854966.html

Alabama May come from Choctaw meaning “thicket-clearers” or “vegetation-gatherers”
Alaska Corruption of Aleut word meaning “great land” or “that which the sea breaks against”
Arizona From the Indian “Arizonac,” meaning “little spring” or “young spring”
Arkansas From the Quapaw Indians
California From a book, Las Sergas de Esplandián, by Garcia Ordóñez de Montalvo, c. 1500
Colorado From the Spanish, “ruddy” or “red”

Delaware From Delaware River and Bay; named in turn for Sir Thomas West, Baron De La Warr
Florida From the Spanish, meaning “feast of flowers” (Easter)
Georgia In honor of George II of England
Hawaii Uncertain. The islands may have been named by Hawaii Loa, their traditional discoverer. Or they may have been named after Hawaii or Hawaiki, the traditional home of the Polynesians.
Idaho Though popularly believed to be an Indian word, it is an invented name whose meaning is unknown.
Illinois Algonquin for “tribe of superior men”
Indiana Meaning “land of Indians”
Iowa Probably from an Indian word meaning “this is the place” or “the Beautiful Land”
Kansas From a Sioux word meaning “people of the south wind”
Kentucky From an Iroquoian word “Ken-tah-ten” meaning “land of tomorrow”
Louisiana In honor of Louis XIV of France
Maine First used to distinguish the mainland from the offshore islands. It has been considered a compliment to Henrietta Maria, queen of Charles I of England. She was said to have owned the province of Mayne in France.
Maryland In honor of Henrietta Maria (queen of Charles I of England)
Massachusetts From Massachusett tribe of Native Americans, meaning “at or about the great hill”
Michigan From Indian word “Michigana” meaning “great or large lake”
Minnesota From a Dakota Indian word meaning “sky-tinted water”
Mississippi From an Indian word meaning “Father of Waters”
Missouri Named after the Missouri Indian tribe. “Missouri” means “town of the large canoes.”
Montana Chosen from Latin dictionary by J. M. Ashley. It is a Latinized Spanish word meaning “mountainous.”
Nebraska From an Oto Indian word meaning “flat water”
Nevada Spanish: “snowcapped”
New Hampshire From the English county of Hampshire
New Jersey From the Channel Isle of Jersey
New Mexico From Mexico, “place of Mexitli,” an Aztec god or leader
New York In honor of the Duke of York
North Carolina In honor of Charles I of England
North Dakota From the Sioux tribe, meaning “allies”
Ohio From an Iroquoian word meaning “great river”

Oregon Unknown. However, it is generally accepted that the name, first used by Jonathan Carver in 1778, was taken from the writings of Maj. Robert Rogers, an English army officer.
Pennsylvania In honor of Adm. Sir William Penn, father of William Penn. It means “Penn's Woodland.”
Rhode Island From the Greek Island of Rhodes

Problem is that "Ewes" is offensive to sheep, "Tanks" is offensive to Army veterans, "Gamblers" and "Casinos" is offensive to gambling addicts, "Chippendales" is offensive to reformed strippersm "chows" is offensive to lovers of that dog breed, "Ragin' Creoles" is offensive to people who love Emeril, "Noise" is offensive to deaf people, "Semis" is offensive to truck drivers, and "Inbreds" is just offensive.

The Washington Red Ants

Postby Sam I Am » Wed Aug 10, 2005 2:55 pm

Since in the NFL the Washington mascot has been judged the most racially offensive, they could change their names to the Washington
Red Ants. As for Florida State, they should become the Hemis (as in monster truck rally). In baseball, Atlanta becomes the Bracelets. Anybody notice whether the NBA of the NHL has changes to make? Goodness me, shouldn't the hockey team in Montreal be called the Canada Dry (think of the endorsement income potential)?

Of course the Redskins could change their logo to look like a big red potato as well without changing their name. I can see the headlines now "Spuds beat Pokes".

I guess it could happen. Although the Pokes have owned the Skins something akin to the way the Frogs have owned the Mustangs. Doh.
