UNIVERSITY PARK – Alex Smith, SMU's leading scorer in men's soccer, has been ruled ineligible by the NCAA for participating in four exhibition games in England over the summer.

Smith, who scored 13 goals in 19 games last season, said he's hopeful he can play this season pending an appeal. SMU reported the secondary infraction.

Super FC Dallas

Now if FCD could just win an MLS game again. 7 weeks and counting of abject failure.

Not that anybody cares, because - as Domo Arigato BearBoto pointed out - this is an SMU football board. How could I ever be so careless?

As I posted on the "other sports" board, the Jim Thorpe rule is alive and well. For those of you who never watched "Jim Thorpe - All American" it seems he played minor league baseball one summer and was ruled ineligible for football the following year because he was no longer an amateur and was forced to hand in his Olympic medals in track. I find it odd that SMU plays FC Dallas in an Exhibition game during spring workouts and that does not invalidate amateur status. MLB has games during spring training between major league teams and college teams which do not invalidate amateur status. These sorts of petty ineligibility rules bother me a great deal. This guy clearly wasn't pulling a Maurice Clarett.

"ET", you obviously have not watched FC Dallas play this summer! Amateurs, all.
