Don't know who "Congrove" is... but I like his taste in teams.

That computer has SMU at 8-3 for the year... 'Nuff said. I'm not worried.

The interesting part of the story is that the computer the computer is 39-7 straight up on Baylor games and 36-10 on SMU games over the past four seasons. It was 7-3 against the spread on Baylor games last year. The computer forecasts Baylor to go 2-9 and SMU to be much-improved at 8-3.

The computer also ranks SMU as the 59th best team in the country. That would be one spot ahead of Notre Dame. It predicts losses against Houston, Texas A&M, and UAB. Houston is 62, TCU 64 and UTEP is 74. The Worst Team in the Big 12(Baylor for those of you that might be confused) is ranked 98th. Nebraska is the next closest Big 12 team at 76. Baylor is predicted to beat Samford(a less than mediocre 1-AA school) and Army the 2nd worst team in Division 1. In 2004, Baylor was the ranked 100 and SMU was 101. The computer nailed last year's 3-8 mark for SMU, the third time in the last five year's that the computer's preseason Mustangs' forecast was right on the money.

Before we hail the genius of our Computer Overlords, I don't imagine that 8-3 is really feasible. I would love to be wrong. According to this, if we actually beat Houston at the end of the year, we get a shot at the CUSA championship game against UAB.

SMU by even 1 is enough

Postby Sam I Am » Sun Aug 28, 2005 1:53 pm

If SMU is a favorite by even 1, much less 11, that would be good enough for me. An 8-3 season is way too optimistic though. Anything more than 3 wins is a gain for this team.

My kind of computer...

I don't think it's a stretch. The folks that put these computer simulations together, pride themselves on their accuracy. From my days as platform tester, running NASA simulations at Cyrix Corp., SMU going 8-3 is the exact kind of red flag you look for that would propel the "human element" into action. Checking and re-checking, looking for math or logic holes.

That being said... 8-3. Wow.

so we all agree that this "forecaster" is FOS.

I'd be slightly interested in calling for a federal investigation into the mob profits these types of forecasts generate. Dumbasses that fall for this deserve to lose all their money.

Actually, with any bit of improvement many of the teams we play are within range. That can not be said of Baylor.

Given our schedule 8-3 is not insane. I say 6-5 but there is a huge range of results possible for this season.

We need to start by beating Baylor though.
Go Ponies!!
Beat whoever it is we are playing!!

I worked with the guy who runs Congrove. He is a Virginia Tech graduate and has done his computer rankings for years. I haven't talked to him in a few years, but I found he was usually on the mark. He is a huge college football fan. Very analytical. He is not the kind who usually makes outlandish picks or picks with his heart. I didn't look to see if he has Virginia Tech #1.
