SMU Football Practice Report

Dallas, Texas -- Southern Methodist junior quarterback Josh McCown
completed 14-of-28 passes for 214 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the
Mustangs held their second scrimmage of the preseason on Wednesday afternoon
at the new SMU practice fields.
"Not bad," said Mustang head coach Mike Cavan, when asked about his
team's performance. "Our offensive executive was not very good early on but
as the scrimmage progressed we got much sharper."
The offensive highlight of the scrimmage was McCown's 48-yard
touchdown pass to Johnnie Freeman against the No. 1 defense. McCown also hit
Chris Cunningham with a 12-yard scoring strike and rushed for a 10-yard
touchdown. He was intercepted once, by Kevin Garrett.
"We need to get sharper but I think we have made progress," said
McCown. "I am getting comfortable back there and I have a lot of weapons to
get the ball to."
The offense reached the end zone two other times in the two-hour
workout. Backup quarterback Kelan Luker found Bryan McDearman with a 10-yard
scoring pass and reserve signal caller David Page scrambled 22 yards for a
TD. The defense scored for the second consecutive scrimmage when linebacker
Justin Williams intercepted a Luker pass and went 80 yards to the end zone.
On defense, end Markus Pratt had a sack and also had a pass
deflection. Williams also recorded a sack.
"Our ends (Kevin Aldridge and Pratt) looked good," said Cavan. "They
can really get after the passer. Vic Viloria was all over the place and
Garrett had a great interception."
Jason Pipkins led all ground gainers with 44 yards on eight carries
while true freshman Keylon Kincade added 42 yards on 12 attempts. Kris
Briggs sat out today while nursing his hip injury, originally sustained in
Saturday's scrimmage.
"Our backs ran hard," Cavan said. "Pipkins has had a nice camp and
Kincade continues to impress me. He can do a lot with the ball in his
hands."
Jacob Crowley closed the workout by nailing a 43-yard field goal. He
also hit a 39-yarder earlier in the scrimmage.
Classes begin at SMU on Thursday. The Mustangs return to the
practice field on Thursday afternoon. SMU opens its 2000 season on September
2 against Kansas at 6:00 p.m in Ford Stadium. Less than 4,000 tickets remain
for the season-opener. Tickets can be purchased by calling the SMU ticket
office at 214-SMU-GAME.
