SMU Cops are terrible

Postby rogershealy » Sun Sep 01, 2002 2:43 am

I was having a great time at the game until a group of power driven a-holes came and escorted about 100 mustang students out of the student section, so the season ticket holders could sit down. Well I stayed the whole game and no one ever sat down in section 123. So SMU PD, if you read this, kiss my butt. Jonas for heisman

The season ticket holders were not in the student section. The students weren't either. The student sections are 120/220-122/222. The student section waz never section 123, ever.

The band was put (in 121) right in the middle of the two student sections (120 and 122), but most students thought the band was the edge of their section and went over to 122, and eventually spilled over into 123. Section 120 hardly had any students in it the entire game. Many of the season ticket holders in 123 could not see or were being shoved and squished, so they left after the first quarter. The complaints that they made were not fixed until after most of them had already had enough and gone home. The problem could be easily solved if they had signs or something designating the edge of the student section. Also, I heard that the band will now be moved over to 120, so the two halves of the student section will now be one big section (which makes more sense to me).

Kicking students out of stadium seats takes valuble ticket writing time away from the SMU PD.

Mustangbandsman-

I'm sorry but that is not how it happened. The students and people without tickets for section 123 were mainly concentrated in the first several rows of seats, which quite frankly are composed of unsold season tickets for the most part. Because I tend to see where the tickets have and have not been sold for each games because I'm always buying some, I know that very few people had actually paid for the seats in that area. Since the Young Mustang Club by far is the largest group of season ticket holders of section 123, and the section is technically the young mustang club section, then I can tell you unequivocally that most of the season ticket holders did not get fed up and leave. When you saw a bunch of empty rows of seats after the "clearing out," what you saw where just how many unsold seats where actually there.
I can assure the people who complained and starting the whole damn incident stayed the entire game and were sure proud of themselves. Just wanted to to get the facts straight because I was there and have had many conversations about this subject since then.

And the band is not moving over to section 120, they are moving over to section 122, next to section 123. And I will not comment in a public forum what I think about that.

Eddie,
I was just going by what I was told from a season ticket holder who had tickets in 123. And when I heard the band was moving over 1 section, I didn't realize it was closer to the 50, I just figured it would be the other direction.

No problem. I just wanted it to be known exactly what happened. Out of curiosity, what was the age of the season ticket holder you "heard" this from? Did they leave the game?

They were a fellow student's parents. No, they didn't leave the game.

Not that it's your job to do so, but if you happen to talk to them again, could you please let them know that a representative from the ticket office will be on-hand for this game and will gladly discuss movements to other comparable sections, since this is and will continue to be a young alum section AKA the Young Mustang Club section. In fact, after this game, I have every intention of buying every available ticket left and making sure that the entire section is full of rowdy and standing young people, even if I have to get strangers off the streets to come to the games or give the tickets to students who want better seats. So, if the fact that people were rowdy and standing on their benches and will continue to do so for the duration of the game disrupts their experience, perhaps they should take the opportunity to move to a less abrasive section. I've even "heard" they might even be able to be accomodated to the better side across the stadium where the big donors sit.

That's nice of you, but they like sitting over there because their son is in the band.

An admirable reason. Nevertheless, I believe they will still be offered the opportunity. I have received assurances that this wil not be an issue next season, so if we have some people who are not young alums remaining in the section for the rest of this season, I guess that's just the way it's going to be. As long as everybody has an understanding.
I'm certainly not worried about police or event staff intervention again, barring an actual emergency, of course.

Ed,
I'd mention it to them, but I am afraid they ain't moving. I see your point about wanting to make it a young mustang club section that is pretty rowdy, and I don't think they mind that at all. They were just upset last time, because someone was in their seats and the problem was solved. On the other hand, what bothers me is students who think they deserve to all have sideline seats. Some of the student quotes in the DC were kinda ridiculous given the situation. The whole argument of "I wanted to support the team, but SMU won't let us" holds no water, especially when you are in someone else's seats.
