Strangest injury in SMU history

Postby SMUFan » Tue Sep 17, 2002 11:01 am

This has to rank right up there with:
Wade Boggs straining his back while removing his cowboy boots
Ricky Bones pulling something in his back trying to get out of his recliner to reach for the clubhouse remote control
or
John Smoltz burning himself while ironing a shirt - that he was still wearing

According to Tuesday's paper, SMU safety Alvin Nnabuife might miss the rest of the season because of surgery necessitated by an ingrown hair in his underarm.

Has there ever been an SMU athlete with a stranger injury?

Here's how the DMN reported it:

Starting strong safety Alvin Nnabuife may miss the rest of the year after having surgery last week for ingrown hair on his underarm that caused an infection. Nnabuife, a sophomore, hasn't played since the season opener, and SMU coach Phil Bennett said he may try to redshirt him. Nnabuife was scheduled to be released from a hospital Monday. He will miss at least three to four weeks before he can return to practice.

Out for the year because of an armpit hair?
That has to be a joke, isn't it?

"Has there ever been an SMU athlete with a stranger injury?"

I seem to remember a soccer player in the late 1980s - I think it was Larry McPhail - who missed a playoff game against South Carolina (which we lost, ending a great season prematurely) when he suffered a broken jaw in a fight with a teammate the week before the game.

A former Phi Delt football player missed a season due to hazing...apparently he had a string tied around his balls and a blue brick tied to the other end. From the 3rd story they droped the brick and it took his left nut with it.

Glad I'm a PIKE!!!!!

That's gross and probably completely false.
But I'll ask Pennington the next time I see him.

Come on, BH - you're better than that. Take that stuff to the other board.

I haven't heard Ponch-o-train in a long time.

Okay, I stand corrected.

It is funny. But there are other forums for it.
Don't shy away from the board, though. We love your posts.

Re: SMU safety Alvin Nnabuife...if that ingrown hair became a staff infection, I can see why he might be out for the season.

Hope he gets better quick.

Is there a chance the NCAA will deny his redshirt this year? I thought you can play one game and still get a redshirt.
