Has anyone been out to practice? How have Wallis and Bartel looked this week?

Pretty much what you'd expect. Tate seems more comfortable running the offense, and running with the ball. Bartel has a tremendous arm, and he throws it 50-60 with an effortless flick of the wrist. What his shortcomings are, in Coach Bennett's eyes, I'm not sure. He doesn't move as well as Wallis, and with the team running a run-based offense that includes some option, Wallis is the best option. But if we open it up, even a little, Bartel has the gun that inspired the Reds to draft him.

Things wont change as long as Bennett evaluates on practice alone. He has already said that Tate is different in practice than the games. Tate will start and I think the only way we'll see Richard is if coach gets "frustrated" again. Coach doesnt believe in a gamer so as long as Tate is beating the scout team he's happy.

A good QB is not just about throwing the ball, it is about coming to the line, recognizing a defense, changing a play, and either calling the right running play or changing the play to a pass. Bartel does not do that well *yet*. When he does grow into that ability, his physical skills will dwarf those of Tate. But right now, Tate understands the game and the position better than Bartel, and is more capable of "running the offense". A "multiple offense" as Bennett likes to call it requires the QB to make certain reads.

Bennett wants to win just as much as we do. He is making the decision to start Wallis based on who he thinks runs the offense the best. And he is allowing Bartel to grow into a better understanding of the game, rather than feeding him to the wolves ala Cavan...

Hey fella we ran the same kind of "multi-formation" offense at Grapevine except ours was ten times as complex as SMU's. Half of the plays called were audibled or check calls. I highly doubt that Richard is struggling with this concept.
