Position Changes

Postby Nacho » Wed Jan 15, 2003 11:49 am

Barnet moved to CB and Moodley to CB per DC. Also Medlock to WR, Swofford to TE and Fitzgerald to RB.

I love the Barnett move to CB, although I was told he has said he'd like to play both ways and get some carries. And with the reports of his success as a member of the scout team, there's some logic to trying to get the ball in his hands.

Of course, when Jack Brewer transferred to Minnesota, there were stories that he was upset about a move to the secondary - and he made it to the NFL.

OK, let's look at this. By my guess, there are some receivers who are going to be moved, or at least should be.

Unless I'm missing someone, we now have:
Chris Cunningham
Cedric Vinson
Trey Griffin
Jay Taylor
Daniel Francis
Ashton Nixon
James Elliott
Wesley Medlock
Jaymond Cleveland
Blake Warren
Reynaldo Pellerin

All playing WR? For a coach who loves to run the ball, even run the option?

How about:
Ashton Nixon to safety (he's big - 6-2, 210, and he can run)
James Elliott to OLB and special teams monster
Cleveland or Pellerin to safety?

All reports suggest that Elliott's too good a receiver to be moved to OLB.

But I do like your idea of Nixon at safety. Has a lot of appeal.

What do y'all think about Moodley at CB? Is he fast enough? Can he cover well enough?

He was pretty good as a freshman, but regressed as a sophomore and last year.

For the record, he's listed at 6-0, 186. If he has speed, he could be a nice CB prospect. But with one year left, does he have time to really learn the position? Hope he's busting his tail NOW to understand the position and master the techniques involved in one-on-one coverage.

Moodley at CB might honestly be a better fit. I'm sure he's as frustrated as anyone by his current play. Although that pretty much ensures that he's out of the starting lineup.

Don't move Elliot. I've been waiting for a big fast receiver for a long time. We need him and Taylor on one side, Comet and Francis on the other.

"We need him and Taylor on one side, Comet and Francis on the other."

So you've got the two big WRs on one side and two small WRs on the other?

Why not swap two of them so that defenses have to deal with one of each on each side of the field? Where would the safeties line up with Taylor on one side and Elliott on the other? Few teams have safeties that could cover both of them.

So we spread the field with all those WRs, defenses load up the secondary and our RBs shove it down their throats. When they sneak a safety up to the line, Bartel goes over the top to Comet.

Can't wait!

My point (if there was one) was since in general you have two WRs on the field (for the most part, and please don't get technical with me PX), I'd like a speed guy (ala Comet, Griffin and Francis) and a big tall guy (e.g. Elliot and Taylor) who can go over the middle.

I know I'm WAAAAY oversimplifying, but having BOTH a big guy who can mix it up with the linebackers and a fast guy who can stretch defenses on the field at the same time just makes sense to me.

"Fitzgerald to RB."

Who is Johnnie Fitzgerald? Is he a walk-on? Can any one give so bio?

Fitzgerald is a scholarship guy who signed (as a CB) long after signing day last year. Someone wrote here (Stallion, I think) that he was the last player to sign a scholarship in Texas last year. Anyway, he's a redshirt freshman in 2003. He's about 6-0, 190 if I remember correctly. From Red Oak, Texas. Coaching staff loves his potential at RB.

Thanks Horseshoe. With your prompt I also remember Stallion's "last player" comment. Fitzgerald may be the only 'ship player not to have BIO linked to his name in the roster on the official site.

As I've otherwise wished, I hope someday the SID office gets on the stick and adds BIO for all football players.
