That's true, tradition is great, but the band needs (A) much larger membership and (B) to update the music.

Someone wrote here that they got new uniforms a few years ago - why? Don't they claim to have a zillion different uniform combinations .... hence the name the Best Dressed Band in the Land? Seems to me the money spent on new uniforms could have been better spent on some scholarships for the band so that we have enough bandmembers to fill Ford Stadium with the sound of a great band. The current band is great - they work hard and sound terrific. But at the current numbers, they sound very thin. We look and sound small next to visiting bands, more often than not.

The Glen Miller tunes are good, but not exactly the kind of music that gets the crowd riled up. Something from the last 20 years or so is becoming more and more necessary. Mix it up (withOUT abandoning traditional favorites.)

Not to state the obvious, but even uniforms eventually wearout and have to be replaced. "The Best Dressed Band..." wouldn't be too accurrate of a description if the uniforms had holes in them and were faded.
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.

Well, for one, new uniforms were needed because the old ones were decades old on falling apart....litterally. And we do play music from the last 20 years... more than our traditional favorites. And keep in mind that things like rap doesn't translate well to instruments, so we do what we can. If you want the band to get bigger, and still stay good, then you need to tell the administration to

1. Give us more money, or credits to give scholarships with (I don't understand why you have to first get money, and then pay it back to the school to give a scholarship...why not just not charge people?)

2. Make the music school stop blocking us from getting their musicians. Every year there are musicians interested in band who are told they aren't allowed to do it. (but not do anything like force music majors to do mustang band - if you don't want to be there, you won't do it good)

3. tell the administration to not create an atmosphere where it is difficult to reqire a certain level of performance from each person without risking hazing charges.

These three things would easily return the band to full size and ability.
