Kevin Garrett story

Postby HorsePower » Thu Mar 13, 2003 6:01 pm

What a terrific story you guys did on KG.

And what a surprise: the papers ignore his performance at the combine, and PonyFans.com comes through with a thorough article that shows KG to be terrific athlete and player, and an outstanding young man.

As if I wasn't rooting for him already - KG sounds like a great guy with his head screwed on straight. Wonderful story.

My guess: Cowboys will choose KG, either in the second or third round (assuming they have picks in rounds 2 and 3)

I can't wait to see a Pony from Houston in the NFL - good luck Kevin!

I wish Garrett nothing but the best. He's always represented the university with class, and the fact that he already has two degrees is indicative of that. He's the kind of student-athlete who SMU should have in front of every notepad and microphone that comes to SMU. Great ambassador for the school.

Maybe we should reach down to Brazoria for more players like KG. Knock 'em dead in the NFL!

I can't believe KG ran a 4.31 with a grade 3 PCL sprain. (I'm no doctor, but that doesn't sound good). Imagine what he would have run if the knee was 100%!

And his little dig at Mel Kiper was proceless. Hope Mel doesn't read it.

Darrell Green had the same kind of resume as KG and he'll be in the hall of fame. Hopefully KG will get to catch some very fast player from behind in his first NFL game. To this day no one in DC forgets Darrell Green catching Tony Dorsett from behind.

Absolutely. The best part about that play was that Green had been knocked to the ground on the other side of the field - and STILL got up and smoked Dorsett. I saw a picture once that had a close-up view of Dorsett, and his eyes were opened up like saucers -- he undoubtedly had never seen anyone that fast.

If KG becomes half the player Darrell Green was, he's got quite a career ahead of him.

Tom Shaw is something of a legend among football junkies down here. It's good to see KG got a chance to work with him, because he's done a lot for a lot of players in the past. There are some players who have said he added 50-100 percent to their first year salaries because of the help he gave them in getting ready for the Combine and private workouts. I hope he has that same effect for KG.

I only hope that Robert Gilmore and the other young CBs followed Garrett around and studied how he stayed in shape, how he prepared for an opponent and how he conducted himself. Even when KG's receiver caught passes, he always carried himself with class and worked tremendously hard. Let's hope the younger players allowed him to pass that knoeledge along.

Good point about the younger guys learning from KG. One of the things that makes a great CB, like a great pitcher in baseball, is the ability to forget a mistake and face the next challenge. KG, like every corner, got beat on occasion, but more often than not came back and played great the rest of the game.

I'll miss seeing #1 race around in the secondary.
