Postby EastStang » Thu Mar 13, 2003 6:53 pm

SMU played in three of the top 100 college games of all time according to one web-site.

#9 SMU/TCU 1935
#43 SMU/BYU 1981
#93 SMU/Notre Dame 1941

Not bad choices at all. However, for MY money, I'd go with:

SMU v. Univ. of Texas - Homecoming 1965
SMU v. Oklahoma - AstroBluebonnet Bowl

These are just PERSONAL faves!

The SMU-Tech game in 1981 with the Bobby Leach throwback play was EASILY the greatest game I've seen in 38 years of watching SMU games. I doubt anyone who was there would disagree.

SMU against ND in 1951 were Feddy Benners throw all over the place. The Ponies upset the Irish in South Bend. This was played on Oct. 13, 1951

SMU-Texas in 1980. SMU beats #2 Horns in Austin for the first win against Texas in 13 years.

Interestingly, the Tech game with Bobby Leach was also played on a 13th day. (Nov 13, 1981). Interesting coincidence.

My favorite game was the game in 1974 against the #1 ranked Aggies in the Cotton Bowl where we upset them, and used whistles to make the Aggie band go of course while forming their trademark block T formation. The other game for the ages and not one of my favorites was the 14-14 game with the Hogs for the SWC championship in 1983. Anyway, we're far ahead of any other school in the WAC in this category or any other Mid-major program.

The 1974 game against Texas A&M wasn't just a great game for the Ponies, but a fantastic game for Louie Kelcher. That may be the single best performance put in by a defender in any college game ever.

Louie beat A&M that day.

I think you mean the 82 Arkansas game that we tied 17-17. The 83 game we won 17-0, and the only remarkable thing about it was that it rained so hard you couldnt see 10 feet in front of you. The TV cameras literally couldnt see the field, for awhile. Dupard scored after a long run, and tried to stop in the endzone, but there was so much water he was swept off his feet and slid all the way to the wall. Strange game, but at least we won.

Yes PX, I think he means the 1982 game. Loved the 83 game, the weather was crazy. I remember the lightning outside the stadium in the distance was nuts too. I personally relished the 84 win over ut. So wonderful to beat the cheesehorns. Wasn't it great to watch Reggie run in those days?

Go Ponies!

My favorites were the 1980 UT game (win 20-6 in Austin), the 1982 UT game (win 31-20 in Austin in front of what was at that time the largest crowd ever in Austin), and the 1981 Arkansas game (win 32-18 in Fayetteville) where we won the SWC for the first time in 15 or so years.

Loved to see, and read about those games too Pony Fan. I was still in LA, but they sure got me revved up to go to SMU. Maybe the administration should remember what a good maketing tool good athlects can be. I wanted to go to SMU because of good academics, and good athletics. (And I chose SMU over home schools, usc, ucla, among the schools I applied to, and was accepted to.)

Go Ponies!

What about the 1982 Cotton Bowl against Pitt when SMU won its (unofficial) second National Championship.

The number ONE game has to be the 1980 win over Texas in McElhaney's first start. UT was ranked number 2 in the country. The sports page headlines read "SMU Lances Tex!"

That game began the wonderful run of victories.

...unfortunately neither the 1980 SMU/UT game nor the SMU/Pitt Cotton Bowl were very exciting games other than the fact that whenever SMU beats UT or wins the Cotton Bowl its exciting. In Austin, SMU dominated a lethargic UT team which never really answered the bell. In the Cotton Bowl the cold and blistery conditions limited even the Pony Express and Dan Marino - the game was really a rather dull game since some of the greatest players in the history of the game were not able to star. The 1982 SMU/Tech game and the following week's game against Arkansas were heart-pounding, finger nail biting cliffhangers which left the crowd exhausted.

Oh Stallion, you just blow your veneer of supreme knowledge. In 1980, SMU was behind a lethargic UT 6-3. Late in the game is was only 13-6 SMU. James Mobley intercepted a pass against UT and ran it back for a TD.

Texas then put in its best passer, McIvers who did move the UT into scoring position. A pass caught in the end zone was ruled OOD as the receiver had his toes on the sideline. There was still time for UT to get back in the game had that counted. For many, it was a nail biter until about the last minute and a half.
