The thing that bugs me is the attitude of all the media outlets I have sent comments about this to: "No one wants to hear about SMU." Although some on this site spend a lot of time agreeing with this proposition, and pointing out why no one should care about SMU, there is a fundamental flaw in this "justification" for not reporting, discussing, acknowledging SMU. Like it or not, the media doesn't just report news, it MAKES it. The DMN, the Ticket, and all the other media outlets that marginalize and ignore SMU because "nobody cares" spend plenty of time making other "non-stories" into something that somebody cares about (not to mention reporting other things that people don't care about). If they even talked about us a little bit, people would start to be interested, pay closer attention, be aware of when games are, care if we lose. And the opposite is true. It's a self perpetuating cycle. When they ignore us, of course nobody cares.
The Cubs haven't done jack___ in a long time, but the Chicago papers still cover them plenty. And as a result, they ARE news -- whether they're winning or losing, and people care. And so what if we have fewer SMU grads in Dallas than UT grads? You think UT grads are going to start an uproar if the DMN starts giving a few more column inches to SMU instead of that meaningless story about the UT waterboy who went to HP? And I don't think the disparity is as huge as many think. There are a lot of people in this city with some sort of connection to SMU who certainly wouldn't mind a bit more coverage -- and perhaps more importantly, a lot of people with money and power with connection to SMU. That alone should merit a little more coverage of the hometown team.
