Blue Blanks Red 31-0 in SMU Spring Game
Bartel Throws for 247 Yards, Two TDs

Dallas, Texas -- Sophomore quarterback Richard Bartel completed 15-of-25 passes for 247 yards and two TDs to lead the Blue, made up of primarily of first-teamers, to a 31-0 victory over the Red in SMU's annual spring Red-Blue Game on Saturday afternoon at Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The workout closed spring practice for the Mustangs.

"We had a good day," said SMU head coach Phil Bennett. "We throw and catch the ball so much better and Richard was very sharp today. Both he and Tate have improved greatly this spring.

"We ran the ball pretty well today also. We know what Keylon (Kincade) can do and Johnnie Fitzgerald showed what he can do today."

Fitzgerald rushed for a game-high 139 yards on 19 carries while splitting time with both teams.

The Blue scored on its second possession when, after driving 69 yards in 11 plays, Chris McMurtray connected on a 25-yard field goal. It extended the lead to 10-0 late in the opening period when Bartel hooked up with tight end Trent Hrncir on a 13-yard TD pass.

Bartel found Kincade for a 30-yard scoring strike in the second quarter as the Blue led 17-0 at halftime.
Wallis saw time with the Blue in the second half and hit Matt Rushbrook with a five-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter. Rushbrook continued his excellent spring with five catches for 110 yards in the game, including a 48-yard reception from Bartel.

Senior linebacker Jarrian James closed the scoring midway through the final period when he picked off walk-on Chuck Zars' pass and returned it 27 yards for a TD.

Wallis completed 13-of-27 passes for 104 yards while Kincade added 67 yards on the ground on 13 carries. Don Ieremia-Stansbury led the defense with two sacks and a tackle for loss.

I didn't realize Ashton Nixon even played. But I've always liked his athletic ability and arm strength. No, I'm not saying he should unseat Bartel or Wallis. It's just nice to have a #3 QB with some ability.
