Need a little help...

Postby MrMustang1965 » Fri May 09, 2003 2:17 am

There was an auction on www.eBay.com the other day of some miniature college helmets. They were all from Texas: SMU, TCU, TT, UH and then, there was one that I could not identify for the life of me! (The seller said it was SFA but I quickly emailed him to correct his mistake.)

This helmet was red with the state of Texas in white on the side and then a gold star inside Texas almost directly over the Dallas-Ft. Worth area. I've researched it from almost every possible source and I cannot identify which school this is! I even went to the JUCO web sites...it's not Kilgore JC or Tyler JC or Navarro JC!

Can anyone help identify which school this helmet belongs to? I'd appreciate it!

Here's the link so you can see it: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2727975396&category=37753

i think that is the 'old dallas texans helmet before they moved to baltimore or kansas city.

try this @ the helmet project - kansas city... click on 'afc - west' @ the top...

KANSAS CITY CHIEFS including Dallas Texans

1960 - 1962 1963 - 1973 1974 - present
*see note 1 below *see note 2 below

*1 This franchise was originally based in Dallas and known as the 'Texans'; this is the helmet used by the Dallas Texans from 1960 through 1962. The team moved to Kansas City and changed its name to the 'Chiefs' for the 1963 season.

*2 The arrowhead logo was significantly larger during this period than on the current helmet, and the black outlines around the arrowhead and the letters "KC" were narrower.

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!

For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

That helmet was the old Dallas Texans helmet. I was just a lad growing up in Dallas when Abner Haynes lead that team to the AFL Championship in their last season in Dallas. As I recall, they beat the Houston Oilers in on OT game that was highlighted by team captain Haynes making the bonehead decision to give Houston both the ball and the wind to start the OT period, but the Texans prevailed despite that much publicized mistake.

Those were the days when the Texans and Cowboys competed to get people to come out and watch them play in the Cotton Bowl, and neither team could come close to packing the place. Can you imagine...people in Dallas being apathetic? Who'da thunked it possible?

Thanks, N&C and CP! That's it! So, the auctioneer was wrong to say that it was a college football helmet...but whoever won that auction got a nice little piece of pro football history! Thanks again! I can always count on my fellow Mustangs to come through for me!

Another 'side note'...the Dallas Texans' headquarters and practice field was in the shadow of The Hilltop years ago. It was where the Radisson Hotel and the adjoining office buildings now stand on the service road of North Central Expressway between Mockingbird Lane and SMU Blvd. After the Texans moved, the Dallas Cowboys operated out of this same location for awhile.
