Chick-Fil-A

Postby Nacho » Tue May 20, 2003 1:42 pm

Some UCONN supporters are organizing a boycott of Chick-Fil-A in Conn since the restaurant chain is a major supporter of the ACC. Problem is that there are only about 3 Chick-Fil-As in Conn.

NY newspaper guy on ESPN says it is 80-20 that Miami will go to the ACC. He sees BE conference going to about 8-9 teams.

Eastern media absolutely hates this. Absolutely hates it.

I got news for the BE comish who stated that this had never happened before. We have been through this twice moron.

Why does the eastern media hate this? I'd think they'd be slobbering at the idea of having a Florida State-Miami game with conference significance every year. The games between FSU, Miami and Florida already are big games, anyway. This just adds to that, and I assume the eastern media would love it. Makes "their" games even bigger, doesn't it?

They are all drinking buddies with Boeheim, Calhoun, Jarvis, Eshrick, and Tranghese. The southern types in the ACC bother them.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

I get the impression that they see it as a betrayal of their northeastern roots. It's a very territorial kind of thing.

I think this whole saga has shown the sad state of sports media. These “journalists” are not newsmen, they are talking heads.

In talk radio, it is one thing to constantly editorialize without any facts to back up opinions, but for print and television it is quite another.

For every story that discussed the financial reality of why ACC expansion was even possible, there were 75 stories where the journalist spouted off a baseless new conference alignment, or gave a one sided account of the ethics involved.

ESPN has almost exclusively dedicated its "ESPN extra points" to the Big East cause, going so far as claiming the Big East made Notre Dame the athletic school it is.

Another good example is the treatment of Tranghese as a victim.

First, the Big East did the same thing to the Atlantic 10 last decade; that alone should be enough to render his whole oratory pointless and hypocritical.

Let’s go a step further, this is a guy who went on ESPN six months ago as stated in a National interview that it would be over his dead body that the BCS presidents ever share the financial rewards and OPPORTUNITY in college football. Tranghese is not solely responsible for the bastardizing of amateur athletics, but he is definitely a conspirator. It is dumb founding that a newsman wouldn't ask him about his history when he spouts off about the ethics of his current situation or talks about the ACC undermining the spirit of collegiate competition.

If you allow me an editorial, this is the case of 5 greedy school presidents and an unethical conference commissioner who finally got their just desserts. Welcome to our world Mikey.

To get a gist of what I'm saying above, check out CBSsportsline.com.

Right now there is an article where the writer predicts that the Mountain West Conference will expand with UNLV.

Unbelievable that a guy who writes for a major brand wouldn't even know that UNLV was a charter member of the Mountain West. Shows you the type of work that goes into these articles.

The reason the eastern media hates it, particularly Florida media, is because it means that Miami and FSU will have to play each other every year and it will count towards one not being able to compete for the conference and national championships. Having the top 3 FL schools in 3 different conferences has worked well here... people are definitely resistant to change.

the fact that a national writer didn't know UNLV was in the MWC tells you how insignificant the MWC is in the big picture. Again, the BCS has created a very clear division of "haves" and "have nots" in college football and anyone playing in the CUSA, MAC, SBC, WAC or MWC is pretty much insignificant in college football these days. Only the programs that dominate those conferences (Louisville, Marshall, Fresno, BYU/Colo St) and make a lot of TV appearances get any notice on a national level. That's the way the BCS was created and apparently how it intends to continue operating, so contrary to many people's belief, it really doesn't matter too much who we are associated with in the next round of musical chairs. Unless you are a consistently top program in a non-BCS league, you aren't going to see much TV time and won't get much exposure. SMU is poised to be a media darling because everyone would love the story of the program that returned from the ashes and proved that a program can be built "the right way".
