Baylor loses QB

I saw this on sportingnews.com:

QB Vinson granted release from Baylor

WACO, Texas -- Baylor quarterback Davon Vinson was released from his scholarship Wednesday, allowing the sophomore to transfer to another school this fall.

"We wish Davon the best," Baylor coach Guy Morriss said. "If his heart isn't into being here, it's best for all concerned that he move in a different direction."

Vinson played in six games in 2001 as a true freshman, completing 9-of-23 passes for 71 yards and three interceptions. He redshirted last season.

--------------------

The question is, would he have played this year? Was he slated to be BU's starter? Who plays QB now for them?

It's reported that he's dropping down to the Div.1-AA level to play for Northwestern State (Natchitoches, Louisiana) in the Southland Conference.

He was the 2nd string QB behind Aaron Karas. Having watched both play, he was nowhere close to overtaking Karas.

Vinson is definitely athletic, but very raw especially when it comes to passing. This kid should have been playing safety, IMO.

So Sic'em, what can you tell us about this Karas guy? Haven't seen him play, and would love a bit of a scouting report.

He played for his Dad at Spring High School. They basically ran a run and shoot. Passed 90% of the time. He was pretty good.

Karas is at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, TX. You can expect to see him get a LOT more playing time this season. The 'starter' (Travis Tobaben) is AWFUL! SHSU is in need of another Div.1-A transfer QB again. Josh McCown (former SMU QB who transferred to SHSU in 2001) is considered a 'god' among Bearkat fans.

Here's the SHSU roster link: <A HREF="http://www.shsu.edu/~ath_www/football/roster.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.shsu.edu/~ath_www/football/roster.html</A>

Aaron Karas is the starting qb for Baylor. The younger brother of Aaron is Adam, who is currently our 2nd string qb at Sam Houston.

Thanks, Exbearkat. You're correct. I apologize for the mistake.

Isn't Sam Houston State where Barrick Nealy (late of UHouston) just transferred? If SHSU's QB condition is as pathetic as you describe, he's going to breeze into the starter's role.

Don't I wish! Nealy is reportedly headed to SWT/TSU-SM, but nothing has been confirmed as of yet.

Just got off the phone with the SID at U.H. QB Barrick Nealy has been given authorization to talk to other schools about transferring. However, it looks like SWT's head coach may be in BIG TIME trouble with the NCAA for his comments to the press about Nealy transferring there before such a release was given. The U.H. SID made it sound like Nealy no longer has plans to go to SWT because of the - quote - "mess they have on their hands up there (San Marcos) with the NCAA now." Interesting. Stay tuned.

Just imagine the heat that would have cooked up if people were talking about a high-profile QB transferring from, say, Florida to Miami before he got his release from UF.

Oh wait, they were talking. Hmmm - a big program gets away with rules violations that a smaller school can't? Hard to imagine.
