Gulf Coast Conference Support

Postby SMUstang » Sat Jun 14, 2003 12:13 am

Suddenly there is growing support on the C-USA board for a "Gulf Coast Conference". When it is their idea it is a good idea. But if we suggest it it stinks.

I almost posted the same thing a couple of hours ago. All that's happening is that reality is starting to stare them in the face. The Big East will not disintegrate like they hoped and instead will simply absorb teams from CUSA. It simply is the only option which makes economic and geographical sense for schools like TCU, Tulane, Southern Miss etc. I think a lot of unrealistic TCU fans began to see the writing on the wall when their AD Hyman said that TCU would prefer to play in a conference in the Central Time Zone although he didn't discount MWC consideration. That option would make zero sense for TCU because they would have no natural rivals among the conference they would likely be in-New Mexico, UNLV, San Diego St, maybe Nevada or Fresno and Hawaii. That is a geographical, economic and travel nightmare even worse than the WAC because they wouldn't even have local games with Tulsa, Rice or SMU in conference to defray costs. It would be prohibitively expensive for a school like TCU especially when you throw in Basketball, Baseball, Track and all the other men's and women's sports. TCU student athlete's would never make it to class. (No jokes please!)The Mountain schools will insist on retaining a conference with BYU, Colorado St, Air Force, Wyoming et al. As has been pointed out a more Southern oriented CUSA offers much better bowls options as well not to mention reasonable travel expenses. Also TCU would be forfeiting substantial BB and FB revenue and credits retained by CUSA and probably have to pay an entry fee.
