D day is approaching for ACC/BE

Postby Charleston Pony » Sun Jun 22, 2003 10:02 am

With the June 30th deadline rapidly approaching, I really think the ACC will make it's move early this week and that they will move forward with expansion.

They are simply past the point of no return, as there are grumblings from FSU, Clemson and Ga Tech about looking at other options (namely, SEC expansion). It certainly appears the 12-14 member conference is the future of college athletics, and the ACC is at a crossroads.

If expansion doesn't happen, look for conference by-laws to change and exit penalties to become much more severe by this time next year. What happens to the ACC if the Big East dodges this bullet and turns around and invites FSU, Clemson, Ga Tech & Louisville? The new BE-South could have those 4 plus Miami & Va Tech while the north would have BC,Syracuse,Pitt,W.Va, UConn & Rutgers. That would leave the ACC looking at ECU, S.Fla & C.Fla to remain a viable football conference, but they would be the ones to lose their BCS standing.

And there is some serious stress in Connecticut, the school that has made the biggest investment in their I-A football future. Any wonder the AD bailed out on them?
