Season tickets

Postby Jim Rome » Mon Jun 23, 2003 2:35 pm

sportingnews.com reports that "Vanderbilt's ticket sales are embarrassing -- just over 5,000 season tickets have been sold -- and it hasn't won an SEC game since 2000."

How many have we sold?

Vandy doesn't rely on season tickets for its gate, like SMU was in the old SWC days, opponents fill the stadium. For example I am sure the Tennesse, KY., AL, Ark. Ole Miss, Auburn bring pretty good crowds to the games at Nashville (not a bad town to party in either).
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Really? I can't stand Nashville.. Neiland is nice and the whole river thing, but the city is trash. Try Lexington!

Nashville has become a Professional sports town with the Titans and Predators; so like SMU, Vanderbilt students provide a small base but VU often enjoys crowds approaching 35-40K, when Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi come to play. The Tennessee game is go big, the Commodores play their home (?)/Nashville game at the Titan's Colesium to accommodate the UT fans and students

Therefore, strong regional competitors, TCU and Big XII OOC teams are our best chance to fill Ford.

SMU sold 5,600 season tickets last year. 4,000 of those have been renewed for next year, as of about 2 weeks ago. Dont have a more current number.
Some will tell you that a glass is half empty, and others that the same glass is half full. But all CPC really wants to know is...... does the drink taste good?

The real crime about season tickets is we sold slightly in excess of 10,000 for the 2000 opening season in Ford. Keeping Cavan an extra year wiped out a substantial portion of those that has not yet been regained. The ticket people (and the coaches) have identified those people, and are trying to get them back in the fold. That is why the season ticket deadline was pushed back a month this year.

now does the "Cavan excuse" work on Bennett's 0-7 start, 3-8 record with two victories over pathetic teams and Sagrain rating above 110. Just a little reminder that Mike Cavan still has the best single game season around here and a better record than each of the other coaches. Remember Mike Cavan wasn't allowed to get commitments from the Ricky Joe Meeks, Richuel Massey's, Vincent Chases and all the other early commitments in the last two years. Your just an idiot if you blame all the problems in the football program on Mike Cavan.

OK Stallion, you always want everyone to get real, so lets get real about Cavan. First of all, you are right, he wasn't the only problem and we have all heard and agreed with your mantra about Pye. However, Cavan's winning season was with Rossley's recruits...it was down hill from there. Rossley worked under the same if not worse conditions for recruiting than did Cavan.

Cavan had two things working against him. One, he was a 1-AA coach who was use to picking players from the leftovers. Two he had no real relationship with Texas high school coaches and was basically starting from scratch to develop those relationships and I don't think he was having a lot of luck in doing so. On top of that, he seemed to have made the decision after the Malin fiasco to not recruit DISD players anymore.

Now besides recruiting, Cavan did not appear to be able to develop the players he did recruit and he totally messed with the heads of the QB's to the point that they left the team every time you turned around.

As for Bennett's first year, he had to work with Cavan's recruits. There were and are some decent players in that mix, but they did have to learn new systems and we were starting with freshmen QB's...so he deserves a pass on last year. My gut feeling is that he is going to do great things here, but only time will tell.

the ONLY way he will do better is with better players which has ALWAYS been the problem. So Cavan did better than Rossley with Rossley players and Bennett did worse than Cavan with Cavan's players and you somehow make that a knock on Cavan? You ought to be a lawyer. Cavan's failure had nothing to do with his recruiting as he has recruited more than his fair share of great players and it has everything to do with SMU's Model at the time. The vast majority of Bennett's top recruits all committed to SMU before Cavan was even allowed to offer recruits. Bennett's success just shows what a bunch of morons we had running the program around here for the previous 12 years.

Nope you are the lawyer...ignoring what doesn't fit your needs. Bennett did about the same with Cavan's recruits as Cavan did except he had to do it using freshman QB's and new offensive and defensive systems. Not to mention the loss of two key offensive players before the season started.

Cavan lost my respect when he made the statement that it wasn't his job to get the team up for games...they had to get themselves up. Hell of a coach!!!
