The Pony Express team w/ Dickerson and James is featured in the classic teams section of the new NCAA 2004 game. What a badass team that must have been.

BAD [deleted]? You never got to see them play? More's the pity, if you didn't. They should have been ranked #1 in the nation!!!

Kurt, the Dickerjames pony express was so good that it almost made up for the DP we got later on. SMU had two tailbacks who were high first round draft picks for pro ball. When you watch thier films, pay attention to the the genius at QB who made the pitch on the option work.

Boys- They were as good as any team you have ever seen. Bar none. I believe 5 guys off that team were all pro 2-3 years later. 1st round draft choices were Dickerson and Russell Carter. James would have been but he had already signed with USFL for a boatload of money. Other greats were Michael Carter and Wes Hopkins to name but 2. The Pony Express offense got the media attention but the D was just as good or better.

Don't forget that the backup running back on that team was Reggie Dupard who was also a first round draft choice a couple of years later.

Definitely the #1 team in the country and would have been named National Champs if not for Joe Paterno's lobbying of the east coast media. They were awesome. Watching Dickerson run was a thing of beauty.

You can also replay the 1980 BYU/SMU game in the "College Classics" section.

Hopefully they will have the new uniforms in the game. Image

We lost out on the National Title because we limped out of that season...

We beat an average Texas Tech team on the last play of the game by returning a kick-off for a TD. This game wasn't televised, otherwise you would see it on ESPN Classic regularly.... a week later the famous Cal-Stanford band game happened.

The last game of the season we tied Arkansas, in a game where we were outplayed at home. A phantom pass interference led to a tying FG in the closing minutes. I would love to drink the Kool-Aid and say they were lucky to tie us, but that just isn't true... not our best day, and we paid for it in the polls.

The Arkansas tie dropped our ranking to #4, behind #1 Georgia (11-0), #2 Penn State (10-1) and #3 Nebraska (10-1). We beat #6 Pitt 7-3 on a horrid day in Dallas for the Cotton Bowl. The weather really hindered both teams.

Meanwhile Nebraska beat an average LSU in the Orange Bowl and #2 Penn State upset #1 Georgia at the Sugar.

Had we not tied Arkansas, we would have been #2 heading into the Cotton and won the National Title. Had we destroyed Pitt in the Cotton, we may have shared it... but #2 Penn State did beat #1 Georgia, and they also looked a lot more impressive in beating Pitt... so we didn't get the votes.

I wish we would have received a split... had Ron Meyer stayed, we probably would have won the title; he also had planned to wind-down the payments, so we may have avoided the 1985 probation and 1987 DP... if we could turn back time

You forgot to tell us about how Penn State didn't have a perfect season. They had a loss. We didn't. They were awared the NC anyway.

Actually, their loss is listed in my post...

Unfortunately, losses and ties at the end of a season are damaging, and we paid for it by dropping from #2 to #4 before the Bowls.

Someone had a copy of the SMU v. TT game for sale on ebay awhile back. Does anyone know where I could get a copy of that game now...?

SMU didn't do everything it needed to win the NC that's true but tieing a great Arkansas team is a lot better than losing by 21 to Alabama like Penn St did.
