Oops, my mistake on the "about 50" but you get the point.

It is worth noting, though, that SMU held us to one of our lowest point totals of the year (was it our lowest? I don't remember).

JustAFriend clearly hasn't seen Tech play if he thinks Symons has no arm. We know your buddy Bartel has a cannon, but he's less experienced even than Symons. It's WAY too early to be ranking these two against each other.

Pegasus: I think that's the first viagra reference on this site. Great stuff.

You missed my point. I never said he didnt have an arm, in fact I hear thats one of his strengths. My references weren't towards B.J. himself but rather the offensive scheme for Tech. As amusing as it is, it is an offensive scheme that has been successful, and it is an offense set up for the QB to do well. I just think that the reason it is successful is that Tech's WR's are capable of taking that 5 yd pass and turning it into 30,40,50 yds or more. And as far as experience goes, Luke McCown was more experienced than Bartel last year, and we all saw what happened in that game...

Didn't we play the Red Raiders last year and didn't we hold them to 24 points. Is the new QB better than Kingsbury? Now, Lubbock is not Dallas and maybe the Red boys play better at home maybe seven points better at best. So if the Raiders pasted the Aggies big deal, they didn't paste us. First games tend to be wierd. We shouldn't have lost to Navy last year. Ask TCU and Colorado about that as well. Can we pull off an upset on the road? We won't know until the chin straps snap. On paper, Tech beats us.

Upon closer inspection, out of Tech's nonconference opponents only Ohio State held us to fewer points (21) than SMU (24).

Overall, SMU came in 5th or 6th in fewest points allowed.

So who knows, anything can happen. This being our first game of the year is your biggest chance for an upset, imo (although I should point out that we thought the same thing last year at Ohio State).

WreckEm: This will be the first time I've ever been to a game in Lubbock. I'm looking forward to it. Can you give me (and the other board members) an idea of what the 'tailgate' atmosphere is like? Or will it exist at the first game? Should we plan on 'tailgating' or should we patronize a local eatery before/after the game? Looking for your recommendation(s). Thanks!

MM - Glad to hear you're making the trip. I think you'll find Lubbock is a great college town, and not quite the "middle-of-nowhere" border town some people claim it is. Anyway, hope this helps.

TAILGATING: There are two main tailgating spots where people fire up the grill and count down the hours to kickoff. Jones SBC stadium is located on the corner of 4th and University - across the street (4th) is a huge parking lot where most alumns/fans tailgate. The students have their own tailgating section (RaiderGate (http://www.raidergate.ttu.edu)) on campus. I've never been to the alumni tailgating, but RaiderGate is awesome with live music and lots of fun. The stadium just got finished with a major renovation phase, so get there early and check it out!

RESTAURANTS: There's plenty to choose from (including all the major chains on Slide Rd.), but some local favorites are

Gardskis (located on Broadway, kind of a nicer restaurant)
50 Yard Line (South Loop, best steak in town, pricy)
Jazz (19th St, good cajun food and live jazz music)
Rosas (4th St, great Mexican food)
Orlandos (Ave. Q, good Italian)
One Guy from Italy (Broadway across from Tech, good pizza, major student hangout)
Spankys (Broadway across from Tech, HUGE burgers)

NIGHTLIFE: If you're more the college-aged crowd, you definitely should check out the Depot District (http://www.lubbockhospitality.net/Depot). This is where most Tech students hang out after the game - lots of bars, clubs, and live music almost every night. Be sure to try Hub City Brewery for burgers and home-brewed beer and Bleacher's Sports Cafe for wings. Almost all of these places have music.

If you need any more information, I'd be happy to help. Since classes don't start at Tech until the week after SMU, I don't know how good the atmosphere is going to be student-wise, but I'm sure it'll be a good time for all. Hope to see you there!

PS - North Lubbock (where Tech is) is going through a major renovation. They're building a new freeway, shopping centers, parks, apartment complexes, etc. across from campus, and right now the place looks like a war zone. Be mindful of construction crews, and pardon the mess!

WreckEm: Thanks for the info on tailgating and Lubbock nightlife! Also, thanks for the photos...the mural looks impressive! Who is the player in the leather helmet? Hopefully our Peruna will be running up and down the field more than Midnight will! Image

Hopefully Peruna won't get amorous with their horse again. One of the funniest sights in SWC history was Peruna trying to climb that mountain. At SMU we think big alright.

That sounds absolutely hystarical. Wish I could have seen it.
