OK, I missed the scrimmage. But after reading the report from the SMU athletic department, it warmed the cockles (and even the sub-cockles) of my heart to read that we had not one but TWO kickers who drilled 47-yard field goals. Could it be that the kicking game could become a strength?
Note to McMurtray and Wolcott: Keep up the good work. We're counting on you this year.

It wasn't Wolcott, it was Mentzel. Looks like Wolcott will RS and Mentzel will be Punter and Backup K. The way Mentzel was kicking last night, he may even get that role. Both McMurtary and Mentzel are way ahead of Wolcott.

Wolcott is tiny...remember, he kicked off a 2" block in HS...

I went to the Football Clinic for Women Thursday, and Ryan Wolcott hit a field goal from about 50 yards. So he's got a strong leg.

I thought Mentzel had a strong leg. It surprised me as I didnt realize that he was that good of a kicker. Of the three Kickers on the team, Wolcott definitely has the weakest leg.
Maybe there is a big difference between freshmen and upperclassmen. I expect Wolcott's leg will be much stronger next year. It looks like this is a RS year for him.

the difference between freshmen and upperclassmen is that they are adjusting to kicking without the tee like they can in high school.

Wolcott will be a good kicker in time. He is extremely accurate from 40 yards in.

What I liked about McMurtrays shot was that he really kicked it high and long. Menz was kind of a line drive kick that squeaked through. Wolcott seamed accurate I saw one of his kicks at the start that was solid. Every one of McMurtrays kicks was long and accurate, I was impressed. He has made an improvement.
For punting, Menz still seems inconsistent. He had a couple of boomers, but also had some lower, line drive, short kicks. Nothing horrible though.
