Growth is not an overnight process

For those who want to lynch Coach Bennett because we haven't played for a national championship in his brief stay at SMU, consider the case of the University of New Mexico - a school with much less to offer recruits. Rocky Long took over as head coach of UNM in 1998 and found a school with a bad team and little to offer as an inducement to have top players sign with the Lobos. UNM won just three games in Long’s inaugural season of 1998, and has increased its victory total in each of the last four years, reaching seven wins and a bowl game in 2002.

Have faith, Mustangs. Coach Bennett will have us enjoying success soon.

Here you go, SMU'ers, this is Darrell Dickey's first few seasons at UNT. He started at ground zero when he arrived in Denton. Yeah, we wanted to fire him, also, but it would have been a bad mistake to have done so.

Year Overall
1998 3-8
1999 2-9
2000 3-8
2001 5-7
2002 8-5

It has taken time but the wait has been worthwhile. UNT has had 2 winning seasons out of the last 12 years as well. We have not arrived even yet, but we are getting there.
