First, read this article: <A HREF="http://www.dallasnews.com/sports_day/colleges/football/183550_03colfbsmu.html" TARGET=_blank>http://www.dallasnews.com/sports_day/colleges/football/183550_03colfbsmu.html</A>

Now, Cavan is saying that the offense did not execute? Yes, maybe they made some mistakes, but what about the coaching errors? Briggs ran great, but not good enough to get a handoff and run 3-4 yards???????? I think not. It is time the coaches take the responsibility. If we had tried two runs and a pass, then they can say the offense did not execute, but comon, RUN THE BALL UP THE MIDDLE.

But don't run like you ran at Tulane. We were on the 4 yard line against Tulane and they had Pipkins running up the middle and Briggs running to the outside. That is poor. I think we know our RB's roles, Briggs is power(up the gut) and Pipkins is agility(to the outside). Let me wear a headset when we get inside the 5 yard line. I will make the right call.

Oh yeah, then they talk about the 49 yard FG. That was not the problem on the drive, the pass call on 2nd and 1 on the UH 30 was the poor call. RUN THE BALL, Josh or Briggs can get 1 freakin yard in three tries. Give these players some credit.

Does anyone see what I am saying. Does this make sense or is this too obvious or too complex?

Not that I'm defending the play calling or the coaching in the Houston game. But if you read the article, I would say that throwing behind the reciever, running the wrong route, and not calling time out or changing the play when you see the wrong defense is poor execution. As hard as everyone played Saturday, there was still too much poor execution to win. We tend to focus on the last series, but a touchdown instead of any of the earlier field goals wins this game.

There is obviously problems with both the players and the coaching. With experience, these players will get better. The question is will the coach? I sincerely hope so.

I have a question about a decision in the second quarter. On Second and one we decide to run the ball up the gut in an attempt to keep our drive going. After being stopped for no gain, on third down the decision was made to throw deep. I don't remember who it was thrown to, but when we have completed the fade route as inconsistently as we have this year how does this even come into the decision making process?
As for them not running the ball on second down late in the game, I thought that was questionable too, but also understand that Josh was 11-11 in the quarter and was looking real sharp. Maybe if he could have gotten out of the pocket and thrown it away instead of trying to make the spectacular play on second down things would have been different. I am not sure of the new rule, but I think it is similar to the NFL rule. Unfortunately, we are not in a situation where we can assume we will make a field goal from 37 yds, so being aggresive on second down was not such a bad idea in my opinion. I would love the luxury of getting the ball in their territory and then positioning the ball through running plays once we were inside their 35. I think a lot of offensive possessions would have been handled differently over the last two years if that was the case.

I was at the SMU-U of Houston game and I totally agree with you SMUPonyFan.

When it is first and goal, try running (with Briggs - the power runner) first. If that doesn't work then try passing. I may be just a mom - but if your power runner is breaking tackles and running well in the drive down the field, then try the run once or twice first - then pass!!

Yeah, there were mistakes by both Josh(holding on too long) and the recievers,(drops, wrong routes) But when it came down to it I saw problems with playcalling that hurt the most. It's easy to second guess, but yes, there were opportunities all night to win the game, but the most memorable are the ones at the end, when we could have won the game. We played good enough to win!!
