* SMU and BU are two of only six teams in the nation with five 2002 bowl champions on their schedules. (The other four are Illinois, Northwestern, Penn State and West Virginia.)

* Richard Bartel's 2002 pass completion percentage of 60.1 percent was the best by an SMU quarterback since Mike Romo hit 60.7 percent of his passes in 1990.

* Saturday's game is the 77th between the two schools. SMU leads the series, 36-33-7, and has an 18-16-3 edge in games played in Waco. The Ponies are 12-11 in games played in BU's Floyd Casey Stadium.

* As of Monday, redshirt freshman DT Julian Hill (6-3, 240) is out (knee); true freshman RB Brandon Whitaker (5-10, 190) is questionable (left ankle); senior safety Danielle McLean (5-11, 197) is probable (right ankle); and senior RB Rashad Armstrong (5-8, 191) is probable (rib contusion).
