Mustangs set sights on Baylor
By Darryl Richards

DALLAS - SMU defensive tackle Allan Adami would love to beat Baylor on Saturday for a simple reason.

He doesn't care much about the ongoing debate about BCS schools having an advantage over non-BCS schools. That won't be resolved until Adami graduates. Sure, defeating Baylor would mean beating a Big 12 school. But Adami would much rather win a Western Athletic Conference title. Baylor appears quite beatable after North Texas walloped the Bears 52-14 in Denton.

But Adami knows better than to look down at any opponent.

"There is no reason to look past Baylor," Adami said. "We didn't exactly play well against Texas Tech [a 59-10 loss] the last time we played. We have no right to say we will roll into Waco."

Adami just wants to win a game in September.

The Mustangs are 2-21 in the month of September since 1997. The last time SMU won a game in September was in the 2000 season opener against Kansas in the inaugural game at Gerald J. Ford Stadium.

Line shift

The Mustangs will have a new look on their offensive line as Brad Kieschnick moves from left guard to left tackle, Grant Edison moves from right guard to left guard and junior Townsend Hargis moves into the starting role at right guard.

SMU is trying to put its best linemen on the field at the same time while building depth. The Mustangs expect true freshman Bryan Turner and redshirt freshman Darrin Johnson to be part of the rotation on the line.

Working overtime

SMU is going in the wrong direction when it comes to its attempt at limiting the number of times tailback Keylon Kincade carries the ball. Kincade averaged 27.3 carries a game last season and finished the year with a staggering 327 carries. Kincade had 29 carries for 93 yards against Texas Tech in the season opener.

The Mustangs want Kincade to average 25 carries a game because they think he will be a more effective runner with fewer attempts.

Briefly

• Wide receiver Jay Taylor might miss the season with a mid-foot sprain that is similar to the injury that kept Chris Cunningham out last season. Bennett described the injury as being more like a broken foot than a mere sprain.

• Freshman defensive tackle Brandon Bonds, who had arthroscopic knee surgery two weeks ago, will play in the Baylor game.
