RE: Parking for OSU game

Postby geephunk » Fri Sep 19, 2003 1:27 pm

Actually, the post should be called "parking for the SMU game" we are the hosts.

However, this post represents a problem for out program. "Poke Em" is just one of thousands of Dallasites that have never been to an SMU game, probably because they are alumni elsewhere.

If somehow we could convince the public to accept SMU as "Dallas' Team" regardless of where they went to school, we could really begin to fill up Ford Stadium. And if subsequently, a fans' alma mater comes to town, they will still come out to the game. As long as they come and support us at other home games.

Case in point, I live in Prove and graduated from BYU. I will cheer them on every week, EXCEPT when the Ponies come to town. I will be in my RED and BLUE.

But I guess this is hard to do until we start winning. If there was some way to connect the Dallas public to the university so that many people will claim it as their own...I guess winning is the ticket.

Give em hell mustangs!!!

Winning would help a bit, but if SMU wants to build a connection between itself and the Dallas the community, the first step would have to be dropping the whole "We're not Snobs, we're just better than you" attitude. You have no idea how much antipathy thats created outside the SMU bubble.

If you want the people of Dallas to come to your events, you first have to dispel the feeling that you look down your nose at them. Its beyond amazing that a city with a foreign population as large as Dallas, both hispanic and European, that turns out in the thousands to watch the Dallas Burn, totally ignores one of the best college soccer programs in the country. The people in Dallas wont support a very successful program in a popular sport, because its SMU. Think about what that means.

turn out by the thousands for the Burn? - by the 100 maybe, but their attnedence this year is a joke -

SMU wins in football and everyone will come running back - which is why we need to schedule some weak sisters early so we can build some excitement. We are who we are as far as a university goes - nobody is going to, or needs to "change their attitude". the consistent fans of SMU are for the most part very nice, normal sports fans with nice families, and the students are, well... students - basically out to have fun. Winning cures everything.

Right, right, winning cures everything. Somtime ask the Horned Frog fans about how much their 5 straight bowl games has solved all their attendance problems. Its never as simple as you want to believe.
SMU has been winning against weak sisters in basketball for several years now, have people come running back? No, they turn out in pretty good numbers to watch the Mustangs get beat when Texas Tech or Tennesssee come to town, but hardly anyone wants to watch SMU play San Jose State, even when a win is guaranteed.

According to the MLS website, the Burn are averaging 7,729 fans per game this year. While that may be only slightly more than half their historical average for the first 6 years of the franchises existence, its still a great deal more than 100, and you cant deny that in good years the team has drawn very good sized crowds, or that there is a market in this city for good soccer, a market that SMU is failing to tap into.

For the rest of it, thanks for proving my point.

CPC didnt refer to himself in the 3rd person a single time in that whole post. Dont you feel happy now?

Don't you mean "The CPC"??? Image
SMU's first president, Robert S. Hyer, selected Harvard Crimson and Yale Blue as SMU's colors to symbolize SMU's high academic standards. We are one of the few Universities to have school colors with real meaning...and we just blow them off.
