Inspiration: Marshall University's Thundering Herd

Postby MrMustang1965 » Sun Sep 21, 2003 12:45 am

In the 70s, Marshall U. suffered a great tragedy when its team was killed in a plane crash. Since then, the Thundering Herd has 'risen from the ashes' (slogan seen in the school's stadium) to greatness in Div.1-AA and Div.1-A. They defeated #6 Kansas State today in Manhattan, KS.

SMU needs to take a page from the Marshall notebook and bring itself 'out of the ashes' of the Death Penalty.

Until proven otherwise, SMU is unwilling to compete. What else can you think from out here? I don't see any urgency. I guess we are on the 5 year building plan. The only problem is the new recruiting procedures came at least 5 years too late, because we need to compete now.

Marshall's academic Model seriously rivals Fresno St and Kansas St for lowest in the NCAA-why compare the success of a school that would be impossible to duplicate.

That's true. Marshall will take non-qualifiers and as a public school, has favorable tuition rates and offers programs of study that are conducive to keeping those academic giants eligible.

People tend to forget the disadvantages the small private schools have trying to compete in today's world of college football. Marshall is also the only game in town in Huntington, W.Va and they enjoy rabid fan support as a result.
