What's everyone's gut on this one?

Postby SmooBoy » Fri Oct 03, 2003 4:20 pm

Do we win tomorrow? Yes, we average 8.0 points a game, and yes, we give up 33.0 a game. But we desperately need this one tomorrow. :shifty: :shifty: :shifty:

That's a great question. And a difficult question. Which is tragic. One should not have to wonder whether a victory against UTEP is possible or not. SMU should have far superior talent then UTEP. I say play the freshmen. Let them at least get some experience now so that they will be seasoned next year.

I am not sure we cover but I think we win.

I think we stuff their offense but I am not sure what our offense will do. Bartel and the receivers have been question marks. If they can break out we could win big.

As a bit of arcane statistics on average per play SMU is -.59 and UTEP is -.60. That is close though we are at home and have had tougher competition.

As always turnovers will be key.

Bingo.

And because of that, I think we not only win, but we'll also cover!

SMU 23, UTEP 10

Last week's rout notwithstanding, I get the impression that UTEP's offense is terrible. So that 10 points might even be a little generous. Maybe they get their FG on a short field and their TD off a mistake. (Hey, we're going to win, but we won't eliminate all the mistakes overnight.)

GO MUSTANGS!

I think we'll play a conservative game, not a new concept, with a lot of Kincaid and low risk pass plays for Bartel until he gets some confidence back. Rushbrook will be out to redeem himself so look for big plays from Matt. The defense will take care of the rest. They will shut UTEP down.My only concern is the kicking game. If we play right, we don't have to worry about kicking the ball except on our numerous kick offs.....

No less than 28 points from the offense this week. SMU will win and win big...

Even Matthew Aguilar of the El Paso Times predicted SMU would win, 21-7!
