OMG! You'd think they were vying for the national championship!
SMU does get mention in the article in a roundabout way. The Chronicle ranked the state's NCAA Div.1-A teams.
1. TCU (7-0) The state's best defense sets the tone for Horned Frogs.
2. Texas (5-2) The state's most talented team didn't show up twice and paid for it with losses.
3. Texas Tech (5-2) Passing game superb but defense is one of the worst.
4. Houston (5-2) Art Briles has best record of state's first-year coaches.
5. Texas A&M (3-4) Taking a step backward in Dennis Franchione's first year.
6. North Texas (4-3) Darrell Dickey has assembled a solid defensive unit.
7. Baylor (3-4) Fewer parts to work with than other Big 12 schools, but the progress is obvious.
8. Texas-El Paso (2-5) Can't match the big boys but beat SMU and Sam Houston State.
9. Rice (1-5) Running game is solid. Passing is terrible and defense is horrid.
10. SMU (0-7) The absolute worst offense in the land - fewest points and yards.
