Does our performance...

Postby geephunk » Tue Oct 28, 2003 10:45 am

hurt our chances of getting in CUSA? Or do we get in on the premise that we have a few things going for us (ie stadium, location, market, etc.) and that in the near future, we need to start winning?

At this point, I don't think so. We appear to have gotten lucky. Yea, Tulsa and Rice have a few more wins than us this season, but our football facilities far outshine theirs and that factor alone outweighs the current season in progress.

If the invite was based of off our performance on the football field, we wouldn't have been part of the conversation. We're getting in because of other sports and our potential(committment) in football.

Got to agree, on all counts. I'm still not sure why we were included in the first place -- I love soccer, etc., but does CUSA really benefit from having our soccer teams come in and whip everyone? -- but I think the decision was made knowing we might or might not win a specific number of football games this year. Are lucky? You bet.

You want to know something funny, the CUSA commish not only lives in Dallas, he lives in University Park a few blocks from SMU. In fact, the commish's house is probably on Copeland's way as he drives home every night. CUSA did not need a tour of Ford Stadium and an info packet on SMU. Banowsky is a Big 12 guy back during the breakup, he knows the everything there is to know about SMU, Rice, TCU and Houston.

I'm pretty sure he grew up in Dallas- I always thought he was the son of William Banowsky the former President of the University of Oklahoma who had close ties to the Gaylord family from Oklahoma.

Hey, you've got to admit that it beat the stuffing out of a commish that lives and whose office is in Colorado, a state which none of the teams in the conference call home.

I never could figure that out. (Yes, I know that there were teams there from the past.)

OK - yes you are right I think that our sorry football team... that was just as sorry three weeks ago (when the invites went out) and just as sorry three months ago when the speculation started and just as sorry three years ago when we finished that nice stadium... SUDDENLY GOT - I don't know - how about Ultra-SORRY...

and now CUSA will flee an extablished instution with plenty of alumni money in the Dallas market and that ALRADY HAS A CONDITIONAL INVITE and go running to... errr.... North Louisiana for a school where the monthly alumni meeting is held (alternatively) in the Shreveport GM factory or the Boats in Bosier!

ALL BECAUSE WE ARE 0-8 instead of 2-6 !

Remember also that CUSA has a basketball componant to it and this is where we don't hurt ourselves. We are not world beaters in basketball, but we don't suck either. Look at who is left in the conference. Memphis #26, UAB #71, Tulane #112, ECU #152, USM #158, TCU #178, and UH #209. Tulsa #57, Rice #107 and SMU #122, could be in the top 5 in the conference in men's basketball. We are in a Top 10 tv market which means a lot to some of the teams that are left. They know TCU is years away from being competitive in basketball. We may actually be competitive now (albeit young). Thus by 2005-06 when we join that nucleus will be juniors and seniors. Dallas and Houston would be the two top markets in the conference and thus having SMU, TCU, Rice and UH gives the conference a strong foot in those markets which they clearly need. This gives them some hope that one of the two teams in each market will be good in any given year and that will help them with TV viewing in basketball or football.
UNC better keep that Ram away from Peruna

Actually, I remember having a conversation with him one time back in my college days when I used to work part time at the Tom Thumb in Old Town. Seemed like an ok guy although he was pretty much getting prepped for the demise of the SWC at the time when he was working for them under Hatchell. He was actually surprised I knew who he was but then again that was the sports nerd in me. :D
