TCU not wanting to go bowling now?

Postby Peruna_Ate_My_Rolex » Thu Nov 27, 2003 10:55 am

Interesting, now TCU is thinking about not going to the GMAC bowl because it intereferes with exams.

Win, lose, or draw Saturday and the Frogs are still spinless suckers. If a BCS bowl was on Dec. 18, they would let all the football players skip exams and receive passing grades for the semester. The TCU AD is a puss and is playing the academic card a little too late. Way to go Southern Miss!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think the real issue here is that with BCS bowls dancing in their heads only a week ago, the administration realizes that ticket sales at TCU would be a total embarrassment. A half empty stadium, with very few Frog fans, and the potential loss to Miami of Ohio (not exactly known as a football factory)is not something they are willing to risk.

It's ironic that you can't spell the word copout without the letters TCU.

This leaves me speechless. When they had a chance to finish the season undefeated, how many classes did they blow off for Mon., Thurs., Fri. games, and the television exposure? And now they're some kind of pillar of academic integrity? I'm sure they had their hearts set on losing to a Big 12 team, not losing to Miami OH. Unbelievable.

Go Ponies! EAT FROG MEAT!!!!

This was TCU's response to the folks in Mobile.

I think its a ploy to play in the Fort Worth bowl, basically a home game for them. And they are ducking Miami of Ohio.

It surprises me how many of the so called TCU faithful are supportive of what's going on(checkout killerfrogs.com). They actually believe that this is all about academics. I didn't think people were so gullible in this world but apparently there. Silly me.

I'd love it if some fans would show up at the game Saturday wearing t-shirts that say stuff like "TCU Crybabies" and wave baby bottles at their fans, or something saying "TCU No BCS..AGAIN!!" But of course they'd remind SMU fans that the Ponies haven't been to a bowl game in about 20 years..But I still like the idea of trying to get under the TCU fans' skins.

The best thing to happen, though, would be if TCU came in here bummed over Southern Miss and not caring if they won or lost, and the Ponies pull the upset...

How about this? This is something you might find somewhere in their spirit shop.

I, for one, would like to think SMU would do the same thing in TCU's position. Have we ever gone to a bowl game during exam week? Only these early bowl games that only pay a team's expenses are in conflict with exam periods. I assume Miami-Ohio doesn't have the same problem and I'd like to think that ANY school in the same position as TCU would make the same decision.

:D I know you're kidding. Most exams are taken online these days. The old 2-hour block on a specific date and time are ancient history.

This idea that the Frog administration is suddenly concerned with academics is laughable, at best. Had the Frogs BS'ed their way in to a B(C)S bowl that happened to fall during exams, we wouldn't be hearing Word One about academics. We'd be hearing a bunch of rhetoric about their commitment to competing at the highest level, pursuing championships, showing they belong in the same breath with the nation's premier programs, yada yada yada.... But faced with the GMAC Bowl or the New Orleans Bowl (man, I'd be the biggest North Texas fan ever in that matchup), TCU suddenly has a bunch of Rhodes Scholars running around in helmets and pads.

Note to the Frog administration: Don't dress this up as anything more than it is. You've had a nice season, and should be commended for that. However, for all the success TCU has had on the field, the Frogs remain an anonymous team (nationally) with players who wouldn't be recognized by face or by name outside of Fort Worth. That's not to belittle what TCU has accomplished this year -- I'd kill to have SMU sitting at 10-1 and moaning about how nobody outside Dallas could recognize Ruben Moodley or Brad Kieschnick walking down the street -- but the fact is the Frogs are not a team with national appeal, and the ticket sales and TV ratings would be next to nothing. For the sake of fiscal responsibility, you're doing the right thing: shovel a big load of "academic" priorities through the media, then hold out for the bowl game that just happens to be on your campus. Verrrrrrry sneaky. Just don't assume the outside world doesn't see through it.

You guy's need to get a little bit more of a clue. The academics are the reason for this, and its why our AD has been in contact with the conference and the bowl for several weeks about this issue. Just because this is the first time its reported doesn't mean that it hasn't been addressed well in advance. It goes beyond just the players. If TCU goes to the GMAC Bowl, the players couldn't participate in all of the events leading up, the band and cheerleaders couldn't go, and all of the students that would buy tickets and attend won't be going. The contract with the conference says that the game is to be played after Dec. 20. The commissioner and his staff let the bowl off the hook. This game would affect the finals of betwen 500 and 1000 students, at least. That means that between 2500 and 5000 tests must be moved. Thats simply not realistic.
