Airplane Pulling a Banner

Postby diamond_tom » Wed Sep 22, 2010 5:29 pm

Just heard from a friend that there is a low-flying plane buzzing around highland park hauling a banner that says BEAT TCU - FILL THE FORD.

She's going to try to get a picture for me.

Good, good, good. We're blowing the previously unseen and unused marketing budget on a game that already been sold out. Here's another idea: Let's rent a plane banner that says "Go Allies, Beat the Axis."

I love it. They could easily take the lazy route knowing it would sell out (or near) anyway, but instead they are advertising still. This makes us look much less small-time. We are associating ourselves to the common man with the #4 team in the country.

When joe schmoe thinks SMU, I want him to associate it with TCU, not with UAB.

We may not have an advertising department, but these moves (banner, airplane, yard signs) are getting more SMU exposure to normal people around Dallas than anything in recent years!

Exactly. This is a game that resonates locally. Seeing SMU pop-up everywhere is a GOOD move and can pay dividends for us as we compete the rest of the year.

And we can sell at least a couple thousand lawn seats if there is demand.

A for effort.

how many sports programs/franchises stop advertising when they have sold out games?

we need to build brand loyalty badly. If people can't get to the game we want them watching on TV...w/ the size of our students body we're gonna have a hell of a time selling out games other than ones like this unless we get the public behind us.

Wish they would give half of the effort for this game for every other game

The very best thing you can do for a brand is to create desire for an item that people can't get. I can't believe the athletic department is actually smart enough to do this. Awesome.

Put me down for $100 on the Axis.

Seriously, though, nobody would give a [deleted] if we have a banner that says "Go SMU, beat UAB, Marshall, etc." No sense in blowing that budget on games against people no one knows or cares about. People in the metroplex will actually pay attention to this game, for better or for worse, and it sends some sort of message that we give a damn, too. N

It will be nice to see them do this for UH as well, regardless of their record. And in the coming years, when we play TCU, TT, A&M, Baylor, Rice, UTEP, and Houston they need to do this on a regular basis.
